Gone totally deaf in my ‘good’ ear…….?

Recommended Posts

Doctors tend to have no idea what is going on when it comes to the inner ear, especially fluid build up in the inner ear. Not only are they horrible at diagnosing but once diagnosed they don’t know what t f to do either.

Big bag of antibiotics is Thai docs answer to *everything*

I had an inner ear problem and the doctor shotgunned me. I was spraying so much bs up my nose it wasn’t even funny. I finally realized how hard I’d been duped and just gave up. I didn’t dare go back and see her she had the diagnosis completely wrong imo and didn’t even care to figure it out… why would she figure something out when she can just sell me a bunch of expensive drugs that won’t work and have me back in for another appointment?

Air travel or  rapid  changes in geographical road travel ? Couple that with possible  sinus irritation due to a mild infection or  simple allergenic reaction ?

Man flu is real btw. But doubtful if  symptoms do not/have not yet elicited smothering levels of  pampering which would  negate any motivation  to attempt to solicit any sympathetic comment from the hard nosed AN kommunity then a visit to  your  nearest ENT Clinic could be a start?

i have one working ear......don't fool around with your hearing as it is no fun at all being half deaf....an infection can kill all hearing permanetly and irreversible.....suggest u drop whatever you are doing and get into a doctor today....maybe just wax maybe something more....take care of it now.

More likely insufficient course or minimally effective antibiotics that subdues an infection rather than eliminating. Rebound infection then harder to treat.

Yikes…..that is scary.

I’m hoping this is fluid in the middle/inner ear and it can be cleared out somehow.

be sure to get more than one opinion .    something that could be serious should...IMO, ..... be researched with two or three doctors "opinions" .  !

WRONG diagnosis is a very common occurance in medicine : https://qualitysafety.bmj.com/content/26/6/484  ( i could post another hundred links regarding "misdiagnosis".... but you can google it )

Have you flown or been to the "mountains" lately?

I've had a few ear infections and never felts anything.

Yes....travelling at the moment....pretty sure my 'man flu' was a consequence of flying, which has then led to this deafness.

If you're in Bangkok, you might want to try the Eye Ear Nose Throat Hospital. It's just up the road from Central Pinklao. It has specialists, including a Meniere's specialist who saved my hearing, and the added benefit is that it is reasonably priced. I went to Bumrungrad initially and paid 24,000 for an appointment with initial hearing test. It cost me 4600 at EENT back in 2017. Not only that but Bumrungrad failed to diagnose my problem. In all the years I've been going to EENT, and I usually see my physician once every three months now, I've only seen one other Westerner there. The longest I've had to wait is one hour or so. I'm usually in to see the doctor within 30 minutes or so.

When you fly with the flu, when your ears "pop", they sometimes will not normalize for a week.

What treatment was given? This is an ENT emergency.  Prompt treatment with steroids is indicated and  should NOT be deferred awaiting scans.

Where are you and where/by whom are you being treated?

Yes, yes, yes to this. There is treatment for this, but the longer you delay the worse the prospects for any chance of recovery. Get another opinion this afternoon.

I've had similar happen as well as the Meniere's.  Hearing started fading on Saturday afternoon. I was in the doctor's office Monday morning when first opened. Got prescription for prednisone one week on, one week off, and another on. Things started to clear immediately. Hearing actually improved after this. Good to see you jumped on this and got the full diagnosis and treatment.

On the same stuff.....fingers crossed....but not too sure that I will enjoy the same outcome.....if the other ear stays as is, I'll be fine......if that goes down....well!!!!
