RID Gears Up for La Nina with Strengthened Measures

The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) is preparing for an expected rise in rainfall due to La Niña, predicted to begin in the next couple of months. The RID's Director-General, Chuchart Rakjit, talked about their measures to handle the expected increase in rainfall during a virtual meeting at the RID's Smart Water Operation Center. The rainfall is expected to increase from July to October, which is usually the rainy season in the country.

 

Meteorologists predict that La Niña will cause a 20% increase in overall rainfall. The Central Plains region is expected to have the highest increase of 39%. Other areas like the Northeast and South will also be affected, experiencing a 22% and 16% increase respectively. The amount of rain is forecasted to rise, especially from August to October, due to dual monsoon winds.

 

To protect the country from potential flooding, the RID has laid down measures. While the severe flooding of 2011 that affected 65 provinces is still remembered, Chuchart stressed that a similar disaster is unlikely this year due to improvements in technology and water management systems.

 

Significant improvements have been made to the infrastructure alongside the Chao Phraya River. This includes the renovation of all pumping stations, which now help channel excess water to the Gulf of Thailand. The RID has also enhanced the performance of water-retention areas which are designed to store 1.5 billion cubic meters of water - a capacity exceeding that of the Pasak Jolasid Dam.

It's brilliant that Thailand has a taxpayer-funded org like RID and indeed a "Smart Water Operation Center" to handle seasonal rainfall.
