Last week, an incident occurred on the Pink Line train service where a door accidentally opened while the train was moving. The Transport Minister, Suriya Juangroongruangkit, described this as a severe safety breach by the Northern Bangkok Monorail (NBM) and called for strict penalties to be imposed on the operator. He has commanded the Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) to hold NBM accountable.

The incident became public knowledge when a passenger filmed a train door opening in transit between the Lat Pla Khao and Nonthaburi stations. The shared video showed the train high above the ground, and it is fortunate that no one was near the door when it opened. The train stopped suddenly when an officer on board heard a strange noise. It turned out that a passenger's bag was stuck outside in the closed carriage door.

Efforts to reopen the door and retrieve the bag resulted in a miscommunication, leading to the door opening before the train got to the station. Suriya emphasized on Sunday that safety in public transportation must not be taken lightly.

The MRTA will warn the operator that failing to improve safety measures will result in penalties, including a reduction in performance scores. The operator will also be banned from bidding for contracts from the ministry.

The company should certainly be punished, but why is this something that a cabinet minister has to deal with personally?

These are driverless trains, and I've never seen "officers" on board, other than when they're going a few stops to another station. Was this just an employee who happened to be on the train, or actually someone assigned to be there?
