Stainless Steel Benches in Lumpini Park Raise Safety Concerns

Featured Replies

Lumpini is not the heart of BKK, maybe a ventricle only; now right or left?  that's the question.

Do people really think this about these kinds of benches?  I always thought they were cheap, unattractive and uncomfortable.

But better looking than those horrible stainless steel things in the photo. Anyway - stainless steel in Thailand is not stainless for long. They will soon be rusty and scratched.

Bring your own eggs and bacon no cooker required 🤔

That's some kind of "brutalism" in my modest opinion. Please, make Lumpini kitsch again!

This is possibly the dumbest thing I've ever read.  Yes, be afraid of something that has never happened in the history of the world, stainless steel concentrating sunlight like a magnifying glass and starting a fire.  I've begun to fear for the future of humanity, it's gotten so stupid.

It's not stupid.

Large stainless steel benches could set fire to the trees on any sunny day in BKK.

It depends upon only the shape of the bench.

Here is a plastic example of a fire hazard.

When we were young, we used metal or glass and sunlight to light cigarettes for neighbors.

Or, we would set leaves alight.

I can envision some type of ergonomically shaped stainless steel bench in BKK that would set trees and shrubs on fire.

I find this a very interesting concept.

Or, one might, conceivably, be temporarily blinded, even.....maybe...

Righy ho. A metallurgist has spoken! AN is really full of experts, we are so lucky.

You don't have to a specialist to know 90% of stainless steel in Thailand isn't actually stainless nor treated.

Perhaps you've had better luck buying Thai or Chinese made "Stainless Steel" tools or products.

They won't be more comfy with the stainless steel.

Stainless steel benches.??

That'll stop farangs wearing inappropriate, revealing clothing when out in public, as they won't be able to sit down to drink and behave lewdly without self inflicting 2nd degree burns on themselves! 🤔🤣

Better send some north up to Pai, (stainless benches not more farangs), that should counter the 'farang behaviours' up north! 😂😂

Refer to the earlier news article on Asean Now, if you missed it.

I do believe they can start fires if there's dry branches. And they are HOT.

They also are SO ugly! Thailand has 1000 yr old stone and 500 yr old wood benches, why SS?

Another, painful, example of why we can't have places of simple natural, peaceful beauty settings.  Rip it up, rip it out, make a towering  eyesore.  Chuwit's park comes to mind, the old location and building that was Hemingway's.  Soi 7 Sukhumvit. Ugly skyscrapers replace older buildings, public transportation above ground in heaving concrete and ugly steel stations. A beyond absurd new train station, Insane traffic jammed up on major roads.   Parks too far off the beaten paths to be seen.

Like an answered prayer!  .....There is however hope for more parks, green lungs in Bangkok:  https://thethaiger.com/news/national/bangkok-plans-130-new-parks-doubles-tree-goal-by-2026

FYI - Stainless steel is called stainless steel for a reason my friend... the absence of iron removes any risk of rust.

Stainless steel will still be ~70% iron. It's the chromium / nickel / manganese (and possible other) metals added that make it (mostly) stainless.
