It's commonplace for Thais to take their own booze into places, abd I've also taken food into a bar. As long as you're spending money there, why would anyone worry?

 

If anyone in a bar told me I couldn't bring in food, I'd just walk to the next bar.

You shouldn't take food into a bar if it serves food just common sense, they're trying to run a business. i doubt thais take a beer into a thai bar

They probably heard it was quite normal and accepted to bring your own booze to a restaurant and then pay for mixers/ice along with the food, there was a rather irritating farang "visa specialist" that used to do this where I went from time to time, seemed largely to show off to all he was more Thai than the rest of us.  However, I do think wandering into a bar with half a bottle of Chang on board is a little different.

i see people bringing a smoothie, water etc into a restaurant, wanting to continue to drink it, might as well bring your own food sit down and eat it, some people are clueless

I guess he is referring to restaurants. Taking your own bottle is accepted in many places, as often you are purchasing ice, mixers and food. Some restaurants will simply apply a 'corkage fee' instead.

Thai places presumably? ok but back to farang restaurants, where are you allowed to bring your own food and drink, beer, soft drinks?

You are expanding the original criteria somewhat now. Taking your own bottle is handled in western restaurants and beyond with a 'corkage fee'. This is the norm. Not referring to beer or soft drinks, but wine and spirits.

Case by case basis. If they have a bottle of water with them and they are bona fide customers, there is no sense in throwing it away.

A personal example on a birthday in Cabbages and Condoms. I supplied Champagne and they supplied an ice bucket, glasses and a pouring service. All covered with a very reasonable corkage charge and of course an ample tip.

I saw two bars today and one last week with new signs up saying "please do not bring your own food and drink..." so this may be becoming a problem.

 

I've noticed this for years in the sports bars whereby guys walk in with bottles of water and then sit down to watch hours of sports without wanting to buy anything. Buy a coke at least ffs

 

Note: bringing wine to restaurants and paying a corkage fee is common all over the World. This is not that

Restaurants yes, often, especially in resort areas. Bars never, but I am rarely in a bar.

One particularly rest, that has this policy, 2 branches Pattaya and Jomtien, even have a ferang wingman now during peak hrs ensuring  you give over your water bottle on entry. Certainly not a welcome start and cant be good for staff morale either.

I do see them bring a bottle of scotch or maybe wine with them, and they are allowed to. But of course for the former the bar gets to supply ice, water and sodas. Taking food from elsewhere into a place that supplies food is very tacky...

Yeah, don't know what to make of the new Nicky's. Still excellent food with good service at a great price...but they totally abandoned the British pub theme. It doesn't even have a bar so it does feel like a canteen and badly missing the English pub atmosphere that made it Nicky's

Service has always been moody in Nicky's, other restaurants have a similar problem, better with a new waitress Sunday

Clue may be in this rest.name, its hardly fine dining and a regular spot many expats, who know its not done to abuse that rule and purchase their meal and a drink: as for achieving its purpose to increase sales its failed miserably.Seemsmore of a  recentmanagment misstep.

I don't recall it really looking like a pub, but then again I only ever went there for breakfast, or lunch meal.... perhaps it looked like one in the evenings with a few drinkers elbow on the bar, foot up on the foot rail?

Takes me back to many years ago and frequent breakfasts at Crazy Dave's, always enjoyed the fry-up and it was a bargain... served by a rather sour faced, unhappy bxtch!

According to news resources, a sizable number of them meet an untimely death by falling off balconies, drowning in shallow hotel pools, etc.  Some of them handcuff their own hands behind their back and then end up with multiple stab wounds and finish by hanging themselves or jumping off a hotel roof.  Be careful, fellas.
