for those that are currently married to a Thai woman and have previously been married to a western woman, would you say that Thai women make the best wives?

I think the question is quite a broad one and depends on several factors.

when I chose a wife (Mrs. Smith) there were certain criteria that the successful candidate had to fulfill before she even stood a chance...

they were

1. Speaks good English.

2. Well educated (Master degree/phd)

3. Has a good, stable job.

4. No previous children from any relationships.

5. Has never worked in a bar.

6. Likes to have a laugh

7. Doesn't mind splitting the bill when we go out (or paying it in full herself)

8. Family aren't on the take (they have never asked me for a penny to this day).

9. No crazy knife wielding brothers or cousins lurking around the corner.

10. Loves to travel.

***(Bonus Points - Doesn't mind me sleeping around with other women/is a good cook)***

Those were my (albeit rather selective) criteria for a woman to have the chance at becoming Mrs Smith.

I found mine way back when and we have been married for years.

I can say that, on the whole, Mrs. Smith is an amazing wife and she is the reason why I am still here.

She has her faults, but don't we all?

Do you think that Thai women make the best wives?

do you have any selection criteria or will anything with a pulse do for you?

Which of these 5 do you reckon would make the best wife?

Being the unfortunate recipient of each, I’ve  come to the conclusion that Western women want a man to start their life with, but are quite happy to dump him for a better life.   The are significantly influenced by friends and family, than by their spouse.

Asian women have a completely different hierarchy ,

Their family

Your ATM card

Their social status

Their home

and finally you.   However, you are the first thing they will get rid of to maintain their status quo.

Lying

stealing

cheating are okay if they can maintain their status or recover it.

Ironically, my Thai friends and crew members always tell me never-ever-never give them free rein.

Firstly, Members of this forum can only attest to the wives they have or have had and in no position to make generalisations about any country's women that includes Thailand

The qualities I look for in a prospective wife (Thai or otherwise), would include the following: there are others!

Honest

Sincere,

Self-belief

Self respect

Self confidence

Kind and thoughtful

Unselfish,

Having a cheerful demeanour

affectionate and loving

Faithful

Good attitude

None of these qualities require much education, so is not on my list

Doesn't exclude any of the conditions listed by Bob

I am more interested in personality and strength of character

Do I have such a thing (Thai wife)?

Yes, with imperfections that I acknowledge, not as failings but of being human!

Like me!!

I never had that issue with previous long-term g.fs from another Asian nation...

This is a good indicator.

I once had a friend working at an embassy in Bangkok. He said someone came in once wanting to obtain a visa for his partner. Unfortunately the embassy had to refuse in the basis that his partner's ID card said "mister" on it and they don't issue visas to same sex partners. Imagine the shock for the guy finding out from an embassy official that the love of his life was not really the woman he thought she was.

11. She isn't a he.

Sounds like the interrogation needs an extra question?

May I make a general comment that relates to whoever one might choose whether with Bob's criteria or mine (or any others) as a measure of the "best" wife?

The judgement or conclusions are as much to do with how compatible they may be with their husband - what kind of man is he?

am shocked to say this... But everything you said about what you think being is a good wife.. is exactly how my wife is and the same circumstances. perhaps we both lucked out. Hell, mine will make more money than me soon haha.. Her family has never asked for a baht and even returned the sin-sod back to us on our marriage day. Plus I have benefits being married to her like not ever needing health insurance or life insurance. She never harasses me on my trips to Pattaya or Bangkok and never questions why I do not answer her call.

To top it all, she does whatever I ask as I do for her. She pays when we go out usually. She never asks to see my income or even looks at my bank deposits and withdrawals. We usually agree on everything. When there is a quip she does not yell and if I begin to get angry she quiets herself and drops it until later. Usually that happens if there is a English misunderstanding.

Only English is spoken in the house or when we are together as well. To top it off. She is beautiful and still slim and sexy after 13 years together.

I find it hard to believe you and I share something in common. I am getting scared and hope there is not more

Thanks for your reply though and congratulations on bagging yourself a real Thai woman.

So, you married a bar girl, nothing wrong with that, but your "majority" is just a guess regarding your life, I guess...............:clap2:

Most farangs marry hookers or women with kids to another man.

Quite often both.

we could do a AN survey.

Read what the Book of Proverbs says about a "virtuous woman", then readjust your priorities and look for one of these.

The Virtuous Wife

10 Who[a] can find a [b]virtuous wife?
For her worth is far above rubies.
11 The heart of her husband safely trusts her;
So he will have no lack of gain.
12 She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
13 She seeks wool and flax,
And willingly works with her hands.
14 She is like the merchant ships,
She brings her food from afar.
15 She also rises while it is yet night,
And provides food for her household,
And a portion for her maidservants.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
From [c]her profits she plants a vineyard.
17 She girds herself with strength,
And strengthens her arms.
18 She perceives that her merchandise is good,
And her lamp does not go out by night.
19 She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hand holds the spindle.
20 She extends her hand to the poor,
Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy.
21 She is not afraid of snow for her household,
For all her household is clothed with scarlet.
22 She makes tapestry for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies sashes for the merchants.
25 Strength and honor are her clothing;
She shall rejoice in time to come.
26 She opens her mouth with wisdom,
And on her tongue is the law of kindness.
27 She watches over the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children rise up and call her blessed;
Her husband also, and he praises her:
29 “Many daughters have done well,
But you excel them all.”
30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing,
But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
31 Give her of the fruit of her hands,
And let her own works praise her in the gates.
