GPS Bangkok to Kanchanaburi and back

Be careful if driving from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi or opposite way by using Google GPS . At least at the moment GPS will direct you to the new motorway which is still under construction and open only on certain holidays (and or weekends).

I just made a 2 days trip and it was an absolute mess. On the way to Kanchanaburi (If I remember correct around Nakhon Pathom) GPS directed me to the entrance of the motorway which was blocked completely.

You can turn left but you will be stuck in a never ending loop which again brings you to the same blocked entrance. There were a lot of frustrated drivers driving the same loop again and again.

On the way back to Bangkok GPS noted that due to road closures I have to use a specified route which is the fastest. And again I was at a blocked entrance of the same highway with no way out. It was so confusing

that a helpful security guard drove a while with his motorcycle in front of my car to show me the way out.

I guess that Google will at some point correct the GPS system. Just as a point of caution please study the way before your journey and do not rely on GPS only.

Go via Bang Len.

Thanks. I managed my trip by driving far past the closed motorway and restartet GPS. At that point GPS showed another route to choose from. Without restarting it would be impossible

to get out of that maze. There are several narrow unfinished and not even paved roads in that area.

If you are using Google maps you should be able to force it to go through bang Len …if not then just add a stop which would be Bang Len. Avoid Nakhon Pathom like the plague ….

Been there, done that, caught in the same loop!

Best advice, delivered in a strong Irish accent:-

"Beejabers, sure an' if I was after going to there, I surely wouldn't be after starting from here!!"

That's a good heads-up about using Google Maps anywhere in Thailand, even in walking mode.

It tried to send me walking up the wrong side of the freeway around Lad Phrao in Bangkok.  I was trying to get from the BTS to the PTTEP complex.

Try using Petal Maps. IMHO it often gives better routes than Google, and it is interactive if you want, so updates faster and reports speed cameras, blockages, accidents. The voice directions are much clearer, and the junctions better illustrated.
