Thai PM Srettha Axed Over Controversial Cabinet Appointment

Thailand's Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin faces unprecedented political turmoil following a ruling on August 14, which found him in breach of ethics by appointing a convicted lawyer to his Cabinet.

 

The dramatic decision has the nation on tenterhooks, awaiting further developments that could see the 62-year-old leader ousted from office, thereby plunging the kingdom into renewed political uncertainty.

 

Srettha stands accused of breaching ethical guidelines by appointing a disbarred lawyer with a criminal record, a decision that has ignited fierce debate across the country.

 

A group of former senators has spearheaded the push for his removal, escalating the already tense political climate. Despite the gravity of the accusations, Srettha has consistently denied any misconduct.

 

Today's crucial ruling was issued following lengthy deliberations by the Constitutional Court, which convened early this morning, around 9.30am.

 

The timing is particularly significant, coming just a week after the court disbanded the main opposition party, Move Forward Party (MFP), and imposed a 10-year political ban on its former leader.

 

Over the past two decades, Thailand has seen numerous prime ministers deposed through a combination of legal rulings and military coups, often orchestrated by the Constitutional Court.

 

Political analysts suggest Srettha may defy the odds given his confident denial of any wrongdoing and his composed public demeanour. This morning, the embattled PM visited a Buddhist temple and appeared unfazed by the looming judgement, telling reporters that he had slept well and was following his usual schedule. 

 

“I am worried about many things, but this matter is out of my hands. The legal process will unfold as it must,” he stated calmly.

 

As Thailand braces for what could be another destabilising episode, all eyes are on the Constitutional Court's next moves and the potential fallout from this landmark decision.

I can't see the Pheu Thai (and Thaksin) allowing Anutin to take the reigns but, really, who is qualified?

In some ways it is a shame, he made the taxis 'run on time' so to speak - after his PR opp Taxi drivers on lower Sukhumvit stop with the back door level to you, you get in, state your destination and the driver puts the meter on and drives.

If that is what's happened then it means the government has been dissolved which means everyone is out, the new PM will appoint their own cabinet.
