Banglamung District and Pattaya City Collaborate to Address Traffic Congestion

Pattaya-In a concerted effort to tackle the persistent traffic congestion during rush hours and public holidays, Banglamung District Chief, Mr. Wikit Manarojkit, chaired a crucial meeting with key stakeholders just before the past weekend.

The meeting, held at Pattaya City Hall, included Pattaya City Mayor Mr. Poramese Ngamphiches, Pol. Col. Nawin Thirawit, Superintendent of Pattaya City Police Station, Pol. Col. Tawi Kutthaeng, Superintendent of Nong Prue Police Station, and traffic police officers from Pattaya City, Banglamung, and Nong Prue Police Stations, along with heads of relevant government agencies.

 

The primary focus of the meeting was to devise effective solutions to alleviate traffic congestion in the areas under the jurisdiction of the three police stations: Pattaya City Police Station, Banglamung Police Station, and Nong Prue Police Station. The increasing number of vehicles and population has exacerbated traffic issues, necessitating a collaborative approach.

Simple. Stop doing construction on every single road all at once!

So Pattaya has no good mass transit system for travel while in the city. The city is better suited for motorbikes but there are to many cars on holidays and long weekends.  The roads are congested due to endless roadwork, to many cars, Zero Traffic Police directing traffic in congested areas.  To many food carts, double parked delivery trucks, Indian people walking in the road.

      The only solution is to eliminate parking on all the major roads, starting with North Pattaya Road.  Three lanes instead of two allows more cars to get through busy intersections.   The road right now is majority red-striped already, so only a small number of cars can park, anyway--but thousands of cars are inconvenienced for those few.

      Lots of things can be done to improve flow.  At the North Pattaya-Sukhumvit intersection, 3 lanes instead of 2 could be striped for right turns from N. Pattaya on to Sukhumvit--drivers are already making a third right turn lane as the backup is often so long. 

     All the major intersections need to be examined for ways like this to improve flow.  Narrow side streets should be red-striped to allow parking on only one side of the road.   There's lots that could and should be done, but likely won't happen--just meetings like this to 'collaborate' and go through the motions.

Giving some thought to enforcement of parking laws, especially double parking, and efficient algorithms for traffic light sequencing and sychronisation, would help.

It is a pity that at present the traffic flows better when the traffic lights fail completely! 

The traffic lights on the railway road never ever achieved anything but total gridlock! They have been switched off for years.

I was told some years ago, I don't know if it's true, that there was only one man in the country, a Dutchman, with the ability to program traffic lights...... and he returned home.

Enforcement of parking, double parking, access blocking would help alleviate traffic build up a lot, but this would require traffic police to do their job!!

Interesting to note the number of police dignitaries attending who hitherto have shown zero interest in what happens on the road.  This is manifest by the number of dreadful drivers whose behaviour threatens the lives of every other road user by speeding/redlight running.

Increased police presence would help during the rush-hours particularly at EVERY junction on the Railway road that backs up to Sukhumvit.  When a VIP uses a road there's a cop at EVERY junction!

Lots traffic violations on many streets West of Sukhumvit highway. Basically, Pattaya Police are not enforcing traffic laws all the time. Many times the traffic police sit in the intersection police boxes watching TV or playing on their phones.

 

Sometimes Police will enforce for one or 2 days, followed by 3 months of nothing. Lots of examples on Beach Road, parking in red and yellow zones, and in red painted bus stop zones. Vendors, like restaurants, block off beach road parking for their customers. Then there are the motorcycle businesses that permanently park their rental vehicles on the street. Let's not forget the food vendors on the streets. Check around Beach Road Soi 13/1 to 13/4. Some restaurants (Hops) even have parking attendants on the street reserving parking for their customers.

 

Also, many streets have inadequate sidewalks for pedestrians, so people have to walk on the vehicle part of the road, which narrows the vehicle pathway. Of course, Pattaya traffic management people turnoff the pedestrian crossing lights, so that vehicles have the right-of-way all the time.
