Paetongtarn Won't Take Defence Minister Role, Declares Thaksin

The one thing that has always struck me as being very weird about politics in Thailand, is the possibility of a PM taking on an additional ministerial role, such as defense minister or finance minister. As if they don't have enough to deal with, as if defense minister or finance minister isn't important enough?

What on earth are they thinking?

It is not unusual in western democracies. It is sometimes temporary or when there are political constraints. In Australia 2021, PM Morrison took on additional portfolios including Finance, Health and Resources.   This is done when the needs of the  state as a whole require a combined and focused strategy,

In Thailand Defence is a critical cabinet position and often implicated in the overthrow of an elected government. By retaining the Defence portfolio  it is hoped that the military can be better overseen and perhaps thwarted or delayed when there are  efforts to influence government policy.  If the Thai military respected the concept of a separation of state and military and that the military was subject to civilian oversight there would be no need for the joint position. Some countries are able to do it: The militaries of Canada and the UK have King Charles (or his representative the Governor General in Canada ) as commander in chief. However, the military answers to the elected  government.

Thaksin? Isn't he supposed to stay out of politics as part of his parole? Could somebody maybe leave a complaint with CC and had him banned for life, please?

Is he now the official spokesman of the party?

He could just claim to be the media mouth for the PM.  Not involved in politics just reporting it. 555

Anything would be better than this lying person.

You are allowing your hatred for this man cloud your judgement.

Despite his flaws Khun Thaksin did a whole lot of good. Lesser of 2 evils you might say.
Prayuth was the the absolute worst PM in recent history

What a farce

Not really,

The farce, which is repeated with every military coup, is a bunch of geriatric dinosaur generals attempting to run a country which they stole, while pretending to know what they are doing, which they don't.

No it wouldn't.

When Thaksin was PM, Thailand was doing well and the majority of the Thai people were doing well also.

Under a military coup government only a small number are doing well, but the majority of the Thai people are not.

Including the coup which overthrew Thaksin, there have been 3 military coups in 18 years, and the military have been in power for at least 12 of those 18 years.

His parole was conveniently ended 2 weeks early on August 18th. It was in the news.

Well said

Khun Thaksin might not be the poster boy for western styled democracy but he was doing a great job for Thailand and for most of the thais especially the common folks.
Then you understand why he is so beloved still and why the elites are so scare of him that successive elected governments after him were removed by coups
