Elderly Woman Drowns While Shrimp Diving in Bang Pakong River

Authorities in Chachoengsao reported the death of a 63-year-old woman, Boonmee (surname withheld) on September 13, who drowned in the Bang Pakong River while diving for shrimp, a livelihood she had practiced for decades despite her son’s repeated warnings to stop due to her age. At 10:30 Lieutenant Alisa Thirasilp, an investigator from the Muang Chachoengsao Police Station, received a report of a body found floating in the Bang Pakong River near the Bang Pakong Water Dam in Bang Kaew subdistrict. Rescue teams and forensic specialists from Phutthasothon Hospital were dispatched to the scene. Fishermen had discovered the woman’s body floating face-up in the river and had used ropes to pull it ashore. Upon investigation, the body was identified as Mrs. Boonmee from Ban Saowachakok in Bang Khla district. Further details revealed that her son, Mr. Jatuporn (surname withheld), 27, had reported his mother missing after she went diving for shrimp near the local market canal the previous day. Despite rescue efforts, divers were unable to locate her body, and the search was suspended for the night. Mrs. Boonmee's body was found with a shrimp-catching net still tied around her waist. Her son shared that she had supported the family by diving for shrimp since he was a child. Even though he had urged her to retire from the dangerous profession due to her age, she refused, worried about losing her income. “I came home from work yesterday and couldn't find her,” said Mr. Jatuporn. “After asking around, I learned that she had gone to the canal to dive for shrimp, but no one had seen her since. I notified the police and rescue teams, but we couldn’t find her.” Authorities believe Mrs. Boonmee may have suffered a medical issue while diving, causing her to drown without anyone noticing. Mass Illness at Samut Sakhon Steel Factory Sends 21 Workers to Hospital

Samut Sakhon, 21 workers at, a steel and iron manufacturing company located in Chaimongkol subdistrict, Mueang district, fell ill, experiencing symptoms of chest tightness, vomiting and fainting, at approximately 16:15 on September 13. Emergency medical response teams from several hospitals, including Samut Sakhon Hospital, Ekachai Hospital, Mahachai 1 Hospital, Jesada 2 Hospital, Banphaeo Hospital, and Vibhavadi Hospital, as well as the Public Welfare Foundation, dispatched 10 ambulances to the scene. The affected employees were quickly transported to local hospitals in Samut Sakhon for further treatment. The incident was overseen by Mr. Praphan Thueksakul, the district chief of Mueang Samut Sakhon, alongside local officials from the Chaimongkol Subdistrict Administrative Organisation and the provincial public health office. The Samut Sakhon Provincial Industry Office and other relevant authorities are currently investigating the cause of the mass illness. Initial reports suggest that the workers may have been exposed to harmful fumes from a possible chemical leak, in or near the factory, but the exact cause has yet to be determined. Elderly Man Killed in Encounter with Wild Elephant in Kanchanaburi
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. In a tragic incident on September 13, a 71-year-old man lost his life after a sudden encounter with a wild elephant while riding his motorcycle in Kanchanaburi. The incident occurred on Highway 3199, in the Sri Sawat District. Phaitoon Intraboot, head of the Salak Phra Wildlife Sanctuary, reported that the incident took place in the early morning. Local residents alerted wildlife officials stationed at the Mae Lamun Protection Unit that a villager had been severely injured by a wild elephant. The accident happened near the foothills in Village 4, Dan Mae Chaleb Subdistrict. Authorities, along with the village security team and medics from Tha Kradan Hospital, rushed to the scene. They found the victim’s motorcycle overturned in the middle of the road, while the severely injured man was discovered in a roadside ditch. At first, the victim was able to sit up and respond to the officers’ questions. Despite the efforts of emergency responders to transport him to Tha Kradan Hospital, the man, identified as Somkorn, a resident of Village 2, Tha Kradan Subdistrict, succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital. Preliminary investigations revealed that he had suffered severe internal bleeding, believed to have been caused by the elephant’s attack. Authorities suspect that as Somkorn navigated a curve in the road, he failed to notice the elephant ahead in time. Startled, the wild elephant charged at him, knocking him off his motorcycle and stomping on him, resulting in fatal injuries. Picture courtesy of ThaiRath Local authorities in Chiang Rai, on September 13, reported the discovery of the body of Mr. Udomsak Chueamuangphan, aged 29, who had been swept away by strong floodwaters in front of his mother. The incident occurred on the morning of September 12, when Mr. Udomsak, a resident of Ban Pang Ngiu village in Robwiang subdistrict, Mueang district, went outside to check on his car parked near his home, which had been inundated by floodwaters. As he stood near the vehicle, he was caught off guard by the fast-moving current, losing his balance and disappearing beneath the water. His mother, Mrs. Kanokwan Chueamuangphan, 62, witnessed the tragedy from a short distance but was unable to help. "I saw him fall, but at first, I didn’t realise it was my son. I wanted to rush to his aid, but my husband stopped me, fearing I would also be swept away by the strong current," Mrs. Kanokwan said. The family faced further complications, as they were unable to immediately seek help. Their mobile phone batteries were dead, and the power was out, making it impossible to contact rescue services. Flooded roads hindered movement, leaving the family isolated. It was only when soldiers delivering food supplies to flood victims passed by that they were able to report the incident. Search and rescue teams, including the Siam Mae Lao rescue unit and the Sangtham Chiang Rai rescue unit, were immediately dispatched to search for Mr. Udomsak. However, with nightfall approaching, the search was postponed. The next morning, on September 13, Mr. Udomsak’s body was recovered from the floodwaters.
