The benefits of living alone as an older man

The benefits of living alone as an older man

You die alone.

Most people are forced to request help, or the state government steps in and forces it on you, reason being you are a danger to self. Or, some other agency steps in because your affairs are not being taken care of, either immigration, or a bank lender or landlord is not being paid due to you either forgetting to do it mentally or unable to do it. Or, unfiled taxes.

I have now watched the video and find nothing in it that I can do in that video by being alone that I can't do now, whilst living with my other half.

I think the video is a load of nonsense, unless these guys were totally henpecked and couldn't stick up for themselves.

If I want to be alone, I just go out alone. If I want peace and quiet, my other half goes and occupies herself doing something else.

Maybe I am spoiled, but we live our lives looking after each other, but not in each other's pockets, which is how the relationships seem to have been in that YouTube clip. On top of each other.

It's these older guys with no purpose in life that spend their days on bar stools, talking about whores and their conquests, pretending to enjoy life, and going home to tiny empty condos and microwave meals.

Not all, the single life suits some people as does solitude, I like solitude, but if the best excuse people can come up with to be alone, is that they have the freedom to take a bar girl back, or go sit at the bar all day with nobody nagging at them, well good luck to them.

Even in Thailand that is now usually the case, absolutely.

Yes,

Of course, they do. They want the recklessness, partying, good-looking boys of their youth.

But it doesn't work like that, because most of these guys are irresponsible and just out playing the field, plus they don't have the money for houses, holidays, cars and motorbikes, ( many don't have jobs!) and of course, they are drawn to foreigners for.............. security.

With these girls, it is called' wanting your cake and eating it ' and life doesn't work that way.

Totally agree, these young girls who specify 18 to 24, are not yet experienced, once they are loved and left and realise their girlfriends with older boyfriends are doing much better financially, they change strategy and allow older guys in. Often, after they're again not wifed up, they'll then settle for a local guy.

Thailand is likely the best place in the world to live alone as an older man, if you have enough cash that is. At that point you have so many different options.

I was in Singapore several years ago and I happened to be staying in the red light district unintentionally, just happened to find a halfway decent hotel at a price that wasn't an arm and a leg. One day my woman was busy with one of her girlfriends and I just started wandering around. I ended up at a food court and it turned out that a lot of the working ladies from the area were eating there. I was sitting down having something to eat and I noticed this man who must have been in his 80's, who was just surrounded by a bevy of gorgeous women. They just kept on walking up to him and hugging him and kissing him and sitting down with him and being very affectionate with him, and it was just such an incredible scene to see that I just assumed the guy must have been a centi -millionaire.

After a while most of the women cleared out and I was finished with my meal and I wandered over to him and I said hey can I ask you something. He spoke perfect English I asked what is your deal? I mean you've got all these gorgeous women surrounding you, lavishing you with attention. What's your deal man? He started laughing he said you know something, my wife died about five years ago and she was the love of my life. I was really bereft for a couple of years, I didn't know what to do with myself and I wandered down here one day for lunch and I bought one of these girls a bowl of soup. The next day she came back with a couple of her girlfriends and I bought the girlfriends fruit shakes, so the next day they came back with five of their friends and it's been like that for three years now. He said I come here seven days a week and I spend a few hours here, it cost me maybe $200 a month, but I get so much kindness and so much affection and so much attention from these beautiful young girls.

He said it's the highlight of my life and the only reason why I want to continue living at this point is to be around these lovely, charming, delightful angels. He said I adore these women and they adore me I never get with them, I don't have any interest in that, I just love the affection, love the attention and he said this is my paradise on earth.

Great encounter. I will never forget that man, and his approach to life. Talk about an 86 year old stud!

I contrast that to an experience I had in a strip bar in Los Angeles many years ago. I was chatting with a stripper from New York, who was quite nice, about NYC and we just started talking about some of the customers that were hanging out. There was one guy who was probably 70, and he had two girls on his arms, he was chatting them up and hung out with him for about an hour. I asked her what's the deal with this guy and she said oh that's Eddie, yeah he's comes here about twice a month, I assume that's after he gets some kind of pension check and he just hangs out with the girls, he never gets with them, never does any lap dances, nothing. He just hangs out with the girls and seems to enjoy the affection they show him. I said do you mind if I asked about what he spends each time and she said yeah he averages $800 for 60 or 90 minutes, each time he comes.

What can one even say to that?

I can remember an American, seriously wealthy, who came to Chiang Mai occasionally. He lived for the most part in Pattaya.

He had motor neurone disease, spent most of his time in a wheelchair.

He had a harem of 4-5 women looking after him. He paid each of them 30,000 baht/month.

One of their duties was dancing naked in front of him, singly or as a group.

Technically you can die with loved ones next to you...though doing it 'on your own'....a weird literal saying that is.

I found this interesting video on YouTube about the benefits for older men to live alone.  Actually, the points mentioned in the video would seem also to apply to women living alone.

The only downside that I can think of when living alone is if one has medical needs or a medical emergency. A compromise would be to employ a daily housekeeper or closer neighbour who perhaps brings food (if one is housebound), does some cleaning, or just pops in to check that you're OK.

The way I see it, a few days on the floor is better than years in hospital.

Better yet.  Get a male room mate to share expenses and chores, or live in a building with a good community of like minded old farts.

Bros before hoes!

They have one, it's called View Talay 2b. Many guys don't realize it though. They think it's just a condo.

The strange thing is that they never agree with that interpretation, even though it does not seem ideal. It's always, things are great, living in paradise, or whatever. I'm still trying to find someone who admits that lifestyle is unfulfilling but is stuck in it.

Love it Jim 🤩 you hit the nail.on the head

I used to see these in Arcadia Beach Condos in Pattaya

Usually they end up going back to their homeland UK or Australia or wherever

Of course with some other excuse other than they got lonely

You were missing good social interaction, it's important but some guys think it isn't until their mind spirals

I can't see any benefits to live alone as an old man, either if I would be young.

Living alone and going out and having friends is fine.

And then there are some people who live alone and almost never go out and almost never talk to anybody, etc.

I wouldn't want to be such a lonely person.

My wife of over 45 years died last year. I'm content alone at home but understand I must force myself to go out and socialise, at least with a few friends. It's proven that mental health is affected by constant isolation, even if I feel fine at home alone with my memories right now.

Living on Phuket for the past 26yrs and married to a Thai during the first 20, I am now happily retired from the cockpit and having to commute to/from work in Abu Dhabi.

At 66yrs, living in the house that I designed and had built over 20yrs ago, I wake-up in the morning to my two (x2) Golden Retrievers sleeping on the floor next to my bed.

As mentioned by others in this thread…… Health & Safety issues are becoming much more important as I age.

The “What if” scenario is never far away, or forgotten. What if I trip a fall down the stairs..? What if I cut myself in the kitchen and start bleeding-out..?  What if….. the list is long.

The constant daily “Drama” of dealing with a “girlfriends” extended Thai family who only want my Baht and live in my house…… isn’t going to happen. Been there, Done that….

Don’t get me wrong, I would enjoy the companionship of having “the right woman” around the house, but trust me….. they are few and far between. Even here in T’land.

My next door neighbor, a single American guy from Hawaii in his mid-80’s, has severe Parkinson’s and has had “Live-in” Care Givers for over the past 8 years. Very sad….

What purpose do you think any old person has?
