Surat Thani – An illegal Austrian tour guide was arrested on the Pha Ngan district in Surat Thani after two years of working.

The Koh Pha Ngan Police told the Phuket Express that on Thursday (September 5th) they arrested Mr. Guenter, 44, an Austrian national, at a restaurant in the Koh Pha Ngan sub-district. He was arrested while he was with two foreign customers.

The customers told police that they were recommended a tour guide from their German friend via the Facebook account ‘Guenter’. They contacted him for a tour guide service on the Pha Ngan Island. They paid 2,000 Baht per trip per person which did not include meals.

Oh, I thought only Russians and Ukrainians are working as illegal tour guides in Thailand!

This business exists for decades. As long as you fly under the radar/low profile how can they catch you?

I remember a German guy in Bangkok.

As long as they have no better than some Thai guides in bloken inglit there will be demand.

A few years ago I met a couple of tourists that have just finished a 1 day tour with a foreigner guide. I can't remember all the bs info that guide fed them (a lot...) but 1 "fact" I remember. According to that "guide" Thai people who do not reside in Bangkok must apply for a special permit (visa) to enter Bangkok. So there was no "bloken inglit" as he spoke their native language. I guess for some people that's good enough...

Yes should have used a fluent German speaking Thai tour guide, there must be a lot around ............:cheesy:..:cheesy: on Koh Kha Ngan.  By the way do these 'Legal' Thai guides have to pass any tests at all in language proficiency ?, and who would be able to test them ? how do they register? Or is it just a matter of buying a red flag with no local knowledge at all.

The Koh Pha Ngan Police told the Phuket Express that this week they arrested Mrs. Kathelyn, 47, Filippini national at a tour company on the Pha Ngan Island. Seized from her were seven of tour package brochures.

The islands are definitely multi-national but with Russians leading the pack.
