A tragic end to a community's search efforts unfolded September 11, when the body of 19-year-old boy, Phubet was found floating in the Huai Bok Reservoir in Serm Ngam district, Lampang province. The discovery followed an intensive search, launched after villagers found his motorbike abandoned near the water’s edge.

Phubet, a resident of Ban Kiw Huai Boerk, Serm Klang subdistrict, had been missing since the early hours of September 7 and according to his family, he left home at 04:00, but never returned. His unexplained absence prompted an immediate search by worried family members and neighbors, which continued through the following days. On September 9, searchers discovered his motorbike and mobile phone by the reservoir, raising fears about his safety.

For three days, local villagers and various rescue units, including the Lampang Rescue Association, Serm Ngam District Rescue Association, and Sawang Nakorn Lampang Rescue Unit, scoured the area. Despite these efforts, Phubet’s whereabouts remained a mystery until September 11, when his lifeless body was spotted floating on the water’s surface.

Authorities were promptly alerted, and police, accompanied by medical personnel from Serm Ngam Hospital, were dispatched to the scene. A preliminary examination was conducted before Phubet’s body was transferred to the hospital’s forensic department for a thorough autopsy. The cause of death has yet to be determined, and investigations are ongoing.

The Huai Bok Reservoir, located approximately eight kilometres from Ban Pong Pradu village, is known for its natural beauty and forested surroundings. The headman of the village described it as a secluded area, accessible only by motorbike, where locals frequently gather wild mushrooms and other forest produce. It was this isolation that may have contributed to the delay in finding Phubet, despite the proximity of his motorbike to the reservoir.

Although foul play has not yet been ruled out, the initial investigation leans toward an accidental death. Authorities are looking into the possibility that Phubet may have slipped and drowned while exploring the reservoir. However, they are awaiting the results of the autopsy to confirm or refute this hypothesis.

For now, the community can only mourn and wait, hoping for closure as they try to come to terms with the sudden loss of a young life.

The police have asked anyone with additional information that could assist in the investigation to come forward.

There is one other possibility.
