World’s best hotel: Bangkok’s Mandarin Oriental steals the show

In my view, the Oriental is very 1970s in ambiance and convenience, poorly located for most people and over priced. It always reminds me of the India of old.  I prefer The Landmark or Grand Hyatt, both excellent hotels, well located and reasonably priced. If its a river location you are after and convenience is not an issue, The Peninsula beats the Oriental in my view.  As a final point, it is nowhere near to 'the best hotel in Asia'.  I could name at least 3 in Singapore and one in India that  offer a much better experience.

When I had lunch there, with some coworkers,  outside, they had these large umbrellas to shade you from the Sun. Of course the Sun is moving across the sky, so every 5 minutes or so, staff would come and move the umbrellas. to keep the shade in the right place.So I inquired how many staff the hotel has, after we had finished the meal i was escorted to the front desk and met the Manager, who told me they have 2.5 members of staff to every guest!

Anyone stay at the Raffles in Singapore?  How would you compare it to the Mandarin?

The Sun "moves across the sky" because the Earth spins. The Sun is moving as are all stars and planets and galaxies! I asked Galileo and he agreed!

But not relative to the earth. It appears to rise and set, but as we've known for 600 years, this is an illusion, as you say, caused by the earth turning on its axis. 600 years ago the Catholic Church burned people at the stake for proclaiming this "heresy". They're still pretty much at it today, maybe only metaphorically. But the current Pope's unwarranted lobbying is extremely unwelcome, to me, at least. Millions, if not billions, of people live in dire poverty and ignorance because of his outrageous bs doctrines.
