Chaos Erupts in Lebanon as Walkie-Talkie Explosions Adds to Yesterdays Pager Blasts
A fresh wave of explosions has shaken southern Beirut’s Dahiyeh district, a stronghold of Hezbollah, just as crowds gathered to mourn the victims of Tuesday’s devastating pager-bomb attacks. The latest explosion, captured in a chilling video, showed a man lying on the ground as panicked crowds fled, screaming in terror. The death toll from walkie-talkie blasts has risen to 20 so far – Lebanese health ministry says. We have not received an updated figure for how many have been injured, but Lebanon's health ministry earlier said it was at least 450 people. It is suspected that the pagers had been rigged with explosives and detonated remotely. Hezbollah distributed the devices over concerns that Israeli intelligence was using smartphones to track and target their members. As of Wednesday, it remains unclear how the second wave of walkie-talkie explosions was executed, but Hezbollah has openly blamed Israel, vowing retaliation. Israel, as is typical in these situations, has not commented. The tension between Hezbollah and Israel continues to escalate, with concerns that the violence could lead to an all-out war. Hezbollah, whose attacks on Israel began almost a year ago, claims to be acting in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. A ceasefire, however, remains a distant hope. At the funeral in Dahiyeh, mourners echoed a defiant sentiment despite the growing violence. One young man expressed his grief and resolve: “The pain is huge, physical and in the heart. But this is something we are used to, and we will continue with our resistance.” A 45-year-old woman was equally resolute, stating, “This will make us stronger. Whoever has lost an eye will fight with the other, and we are all standing together.” In response to the mounting violence, Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant said the country was “at the start of a new phase in the war.” This statement came as the Israeli army’s 98th division was relocated from Gaza to Israel’s northern region, signaling potential further escalation with Hezbollah. Despite Hezbollah’s stated reluctance to engage in a full-scale conflict, Lebanon's ongoing economic crisis has left the country vulnerable, with many fearing a war is not in the nation's best interest. Nevertheless, many will be watching closely for Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah’s public response, expected Thursday, which may give insight into the group’s next move. Credit: BBC 2024-09-19 -

Discovery of Infant's Body Floating in a Canal in Nonthaburi
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Authorities in Nonthaburi province are investigating the discovery of a newborn's body found floating in a canal, with the umbilical cord still attached. Police believe the infant had been dead for approximately two days before being found. A search is now underway to identify the mother. On September 18, officers from Sai Noi Police Station, alongside volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, arrived at the scene in response to reports of a newborn’s body floating in Khlong Ha Roi, Moo 2, Khlong Khwang Subdistrict, Sai Noi District, Nonthaburi Province. Medical professionals were called in to assist in the investigation. The body of the infant, found to be in good physical condition, was retrieved from the water by rescue workers. Preliminary examination revealed an elastic band tied around the umbilical cord, and it is estimated the infant had been deceased for around two days. Ms. Daraporn Kongprasert, 52, wife of the local village headman and a volunteer health worker in the area, reported that a resident had alerted them to the body. Upon inspection, they found the infant floating near a bridge about 20 metres from where it was initially spotted. Ms. Daraporn described the body as being face-down, with the newborn’s skin still red, and with the umbilical cord attached. She suggested that the body might not have been abandoned by a local, as she doubted anyone from the village would commit such an act. Ms. Daraporn speculated that the perpetrator might have been a migrant worker, given the significant population of migrant laborers living in the area, with many residing in nearby dormitories and working in local factories. She also confirmed that no local women were known to be pregnant, based on her role as a health worker. Police officials stated that they have photographed the scene and interviewed local residents but have yet to identify any suspects. Authorities plan to continue gathering information and will summon the responsible party for questioning. The infant's body has been sent to the Institute of Forensic Science for further examination to determine the exact cause of death and collect additional evidence. -- 2024-09-19 -

Storm Topples Tree Onto Pickup Truck, Killing Driver and Critically Injuring Passenger
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A massive tree was uprooted by a violent rainstorm and collapsed onto a pickup truck, killing one and leaving another in critical condition, at approximately 19:00 on September 18. Officers from Klaeng Police Station in Rayong Province received a report of a fallen tree crushing a pickup truck on Route 344 between Ban Bueng and Klaeng. The incident occurred near kilometre marker 89, in the Khao Wang Chik curve, heading towards Chonburi in Moo 8, Krasae Bon Subdistrict, Klaeng District. Local authorities immediately coordinated with medical personnel from Klaeng Hospital and rescue workers from the Buddhist Association of Relief. Upon arriving at the scene, they found a large tree lying across a red Isuzu pickup truck with the license plate from Rayong. The vehicle had been completely crushed, with the cabin caved in. The 67-year-old male driver was found dead inside the vehicle, with fatal head injuries caused by the impact. His wife, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was found critically injured. Rescuers urgently extracted her from the wreckage and transported her to Klaeng Hospital for emergency treatment. An initial investigation revealed that the couple had just attended a relative's funeral in Pak Nam Prasae, Klaeng District. On their way home, a sudden and severe rainstorm hit the area, accompanied by strong winds. As they drove, a large tree along the roadside, unable to withstand the storm’s force, collapsed onto their vehicle. Investigations are ongoing regarding the fatal incident. -- 2024-09-19 -

Armstrong says another big lie told to the public is the approval rating of Kamala Harris. The so-called polls say Harris is running neck and neck with Donald Trump in the presidential race.
