The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has been instructed to finalise the Sino-Thai high-speed railway project by the first quarter of next year. This directive, targeted at newly appointed SRT Director Veeris Ammarapala, was announced by Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit.

Veeris, endorsed recently by the Cabinet, will present his policy framework to the SRT by early next month. His immediate tasks include tackling the SRT’s overwhelming 230-billion-baht debt and transitioning logistics transportation predominantly from road to rail, aligning with governmental preferences.

Additionally, the SRT is tasked with expediting the selection of a private bidder for the 298-billion-baht second phase of the double-track railway project covering six routes. Another significant goal is to hasten the construction of the 356-kilometre Nakhon Ratchasima-Nong Khai section of the Sino-Thai high-speed railway, valued at 341.35 billion baht. This section's completion is targeted within the first quarter of next year, after which a private operator for the railway concession will be sought.

“In 2025, Thailand and China will celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations. Therefore, the SRT must complete both phases of the Sino-Thai high-speed railway project swiftly,” emphasised Suriya.

The first phase connects Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima over 250 kilometres, while the second phase includes the Nakhon Ratchasima-Nong Khai section. Both phases are scheduled to be operational by 2028, enhancing Thailand's rail infrastructure significantly.

Please, please find me a bookie where I can bet against this.

I think becoming an SRT director must be akin to winning the Lotto!

With a Thb 230B debt that keeps growing...and what happens? Zero..nothing...more funds are simply thrown into the hole.

I wish I could have worked with the SRT....they must all drive MBs!

scheduled to be operational by 2028  😂😂😂

They'll never open that first small stretch by 2038 let alone 2028

When & if that ever happens, it will be a HUGE step forward for pollution reduction, safety on the roads and efficient use of transport systems.

If my memory serves me, this was a dream back in 2004, if not before but no foreign investment/gifted to them. Then quiet till Mz Yingluck tried. However, the generals acted as if it was their great idea. Buying up land making/taking up fantasies of a new eastern economic hub all the while driving out foreign investment from the country. The generals in 2014 held a big ceremony for the start of the High speed railway. Question is: how many inches have they completed of the not so high speed train line and how some bank accounts grew and buy how much?

Another misleading headline--read it and thought, great, 'completion by 2025'.    Somewhere in the headline 'paperwork' needed to be added.

I'm sure everything will still be up to code, it being a high speed train, that needs to stay on the tracks..

Who's going to maintain it.

Who cares about hi-speed? Try walking first, finish double tracking all the current routes and running more than 2 trains a day in each direction.
