What I do you know is over the last 40 years I’ve driven luxury German cars and SUVs… I wasn’t going to pay the prices they want for them over here because out in the countryside there isn’t a lot of support- however anywhere I go in Thailand, I can find a Ford dealer.

Over the last 40 years, I’ve driven a Ford Cortina, owned a Ford Escort 1.6, Ford Laser 1.3 and most recently in Thailand, the Ford Ranger 2.2 XLT. My off-road day in the UK was also a Ford Escort.

 

I’ve had few problems, nothing major. But it’s definitely not what I would consider a premium vehicle in terms of build quality. Having owned a Lexus, Audi and Benz, I’m amazed at how some Chinese companies have managed to build pretty much the same quality at much more affordable prices, even after taking into account the tariffs imposed on the luxury brands.

I’ve had isolated issues with Benz and BMWs over the years- but I also had many with no problems. I don’t think any class or brand is immune. Same as Ford (during the fix or repair daily years), there was a time when no one would buy a Jaguar or Audi because they spent more time in the shop than the road. 

I see you’ve driven a lot of troublesome Fords… I did have a late 90s Lincoln Navigator with all the bells and whistles that I quite liked until gas prices shot up, then sold it to the highest ebay bidder… yet it was a Ford and I had no issues with it- granted only had it for two years.

 

I do my homework before spending money. Titanium has a good track record and I like the integrated tech for performance and comfort. PPV suspension fits my life like a glove and I’ve used four wheel mode a few times in the mud, also I fear no highway pothole. It’s as quiet and smooth as any car I’ve driven- the sound system rivals my last Benz. Remote start isn’t bad either when it’s hot outside 95% of the year!

 

I’m a car fan-boy who digs tech… there are a lot impressive vehicles on the market and I love it… however if an EMP goes off all the tech won’t work and we’ll all be roughing it anyhow🫏😀

The 3 we can afford and are looking at are:

 

toyota Yaris cross

toyota veloz - new one coming soon?

mitsubishi expander cross

 

Thoughts? Would want to buy in December.

Why buy in December if you look at online insurance sites

put in the details for a Toyota yaris cross purchased December 2023 and the same car for Toyota yaris January 2024 the capital value will be more for the January 2024 model that the December 2023 model that indicates from an insurance point of view the January Yaris 2024 model has a higher value than the December 2023 model even though the purchase price of the car was the same

Have you and your wife  look at the safety aspects of your selected models

i don’t understand - we wait until December to save up the down payment. We have not looked at the safety but more at the price. We assume these top brands are quite safe. I think I would lean towards the veloz but with rumours a hybrid is coming soon I wouldn’t want to take a risk

Your looking at resale value in 2-3 years time if you buy in December the car will have a lower resale value than if you buy the same model in January and that is reflected in the capital value that insurance companies quote

Don't assume anything regarding car safety some models in your selection have 6 airbags 1 model has only 2 airbags so driver and passenger only no airbags for rear passengers

Some models have 5 star safety ratings Some have 4 star ratings and Some have 3 star ratings 

I would expect Veloz hybrid to be announced in either the Motor show next month or the motor show in March

Also take into consideration country of manufacturer as that can impact on parts availability, part pricing and insurance costs

My advice is to buy a one year old car and choose a model that depreciates massively in the first year.

 

Suzuki Ciaz, MG ZS or something similar.  Budget no more than 400k thb. 2024, still under warranty, how much can you lose?

Hi ALL!

 

Looks like the Veloz Hybrid is not coming out any time soon, therefore Im pretty much stuck on the Toyota Yaris Cross - budget and resale value etc.

 

What about an MG? Like the MG ZS looks pretty cheap on their official site, could that be a good option too?

Been a month already.  I like your style, putting some thought into it.  I had the MG ZS (2020 ICE) and loved it.   So much so, we got the EV version when it was upgraded.

 

I'd definitely take the ZS vs Yaris Cross, as Yaris a bit of an under performer.  Even though a HEV.  With that, you may want to hold off, as the ZS is suppose to come out with a Hybrid version for 2025.

 

Comparing the current ZS vs Yaris Cross now ...

just seen Toyota have some deal for the motor show for the Veloz - with no sign of when the new hybrid veloz will be released is this still a good car/deal to get?

Personally not a fan of hybrid, as no seeing the need, practicality of 2 systems.  But, if going with an ICEV anyway, PHEV or HEV would be better, I guess.  BEV fan myself.  

 

MG fan also, since had / have the ZS, ICE & BEV versions, respectfully.  Had Toyota & Mazda in the past, and wouldn't buy another.  Overpriced underperformers.

You have to understand the MG ZS is cheap for a reason its End of Life it is being  replaced by a new model which will be launched at Motor show at the end of this month or at Motor show in March

there nothing wrong with buying an EOL car just so long as you understand its EOL and EOL does have an impact on future resale values

The pricing of the new model seems to be extremely competitive in China have to wait and see if similar pricing will be the same for Thailand

Since you bring up the EOL impact on resale, I have another question, which you may be able to answer.

In those EV threads, I always notice the fanboys bragging about the lifetime warranty on their batteries, which the manufacturers have increased from several year to lifetime.

I know for a fact that lifetime warranty on other things, like for example PC RAM, ends when the manufacturer discontinues that particular model.

Do you think same logic applies to EV batteries, because with the quick changes of EV models, lifetime could actually have a very short span?

I do believe the same applies for lifetime waranty on  EV batteries i have seen reports where the warranty reverts to the standard warranty of 8 years

It's only EOL if the manufacturer actually goes out of business.  Can't see SAIC doing that in our lifetime.  Or myself, or even wife, outlasting the life of our MG ZS EV.   If so, then value of any <1M baht vehicle isn't worth much after 10-15-20 yrs, although motor & battery pack should have an after market value, and or, battery added to one's solar system.

To answer your question you should really pm existing Veloz forum members such @srowndedbyh2o @mudcat @triplez @luckyscruff

Othewise the EV fanboys on this forum will steer you in the direction of an EV regardless if it is the right choice for you and your family or not

Not really  ... and I recommended these, ICEV & Hybrid, since expressing interest in them.   Same or cheaper than anything JP has made & badged here in TH.  Along with outperforms. 

 

Yea, I'm an SAIC / MG fan, having owned 'made in TH' Toyota & Mazda, and wouldn't even consider again, along with other badged JP autos.  JP badge autos seem to be overpriced under performers.

And the op is looking for a family car for him his wife and 2 small children I am sure most families when looking for a family car very low down on their  list of requirements are  maximum horse power and maximum torque

And your basing your recommendations on your requirements not the op's I think the whole forum would be shocked if MG man recommended a brand that didn't include MG in the recommendations

Two years with our Veloz next month.  The jump seats (6th and 7th passengers get used once a month or so).  Appreciate the isofix latching for up to two child car seats and the side airbags for rear seat passengers.  Dislike the aerodynamics that collect dust on the rear window up here in the northeast, may not be an issue where you live.  

 

The Veloz replaced a Chevrolet Spin which was orphaned by Chevrolet leaving the SE Asia markets.  When I received my LTR visa my ThB 800k retirement  visa account We looked at other alternatives and settled on the Veloz. Did not consider any Chinese EVs, but if we were looking today we would consider a Yaris Cross HEV.

Oh contraire ... when you, wife kids & trunk packed up, it would be nice to have a bit more performance, when O&A.  Especially since you're paying for it.  Why settle for less, especially when it cost more.

 

Did state I'm a MG fan, especially after owner other brands from JP.  No different the Toyota fans recommending what they know or read about.   Except, I've owned what I talk about,   Whether recommending or stating, I wouldn't bother again.

 

OP asked for recommendations ... that's what I gave and reason why.  Here on forum & PMs.  

 

Hard to beat the MG VS HEV for safety & performance, along with fuel economy of a HEV ...  added plus of being less expensive of everything else OP has looked at.  

 

... Toyota Yaris Cross is ฿789,000 - ฿899,000

... Toyota Veloz is ฿795,000–875,000 THB

 

.... MG VS HEV ... ฿699,000 TBH
