If Fred is 60 he could get all his super as a lump sum tax free.

True. It still begs the question of why they would spend the money on property in Thailand, where they do not have either secure ownership or residence, rather than Sydney, where they do.

Oh dear, over the many years I've seen these lovely couples and their families emigrate to Thailand only for the man to find and befriend a young Thai beauty.

Fred's looking pretty good for a 60yo.

A few cosmetic changes, hair colouring, possibly surgery, face lift etc.

A vain guy could be looking for a younger filly.

"Fred's looking pretty good for a 60yo." Sure does, nice to see a guy without a hairy face these days.

But she can own a home legally in Thailand - it's just the land she can't  🤣

And a house is worthless without the land it is built on ..but that's the way it is..they seem to have made the right decision $1.2 mil would get you a small apartment in Sydney, if that..what's better is the whole lifestyle change they've encompassed

They could have bought a house in Sydney , rented that house out , move to Thailand and rented a place in Thailand and they would still have a property in Australia in the future .

They could quite easily lose their house in Thailand

Not all the facts are known about this story. Anyway I wish them luck. In their circumstances I wouldn't move to Thailand without a few millions of income generating assets.

No idea  Qz will not give you a pension while overseas  you have to go back to OZ and then run through hoops  there is hardly any work in Thailand for expats  you need to research

Self-funded retirees can do what ever they like.

That's the beauty of not having to rely on the gov't for a pension.

She complains about escalating property prices in Oz but doesn't realize it's foreign migrants like her who are pushing up real estate prices in Thailand? Wait till her husband gets distracted by all the 'pristine beauty' Phuket has to offer -- and no, I don't mean the beaches.

What's good for the goose.....
