Thailand Eyes UN Human Rights Council Seat with Optimism

Thailand is hopeful for a place on the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) as voting approaches. The election takes place this Wednesday, October 9, involving all 193 UN members casting secret ballots at the UN headquarters in New York. Cherdchai Chaivaivit, Thailand’s Permanent Representative to the UN, expressed "cautious optimism" regarding their bid.

 

The UNHRC, tasked with upholding global human rights, was founded in 2006 and includes 47 member states across five regional groups. Thailand, vying for one of five available council seats for the 2025-2027 term, faces competition from South Korea, the Marshall Islands, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Cyprus.

Thailand's commitment to human rights stems from its exemplary Universal Health Coverage programme and recent policy changes, such as withdrawing its reservation to Article 22 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This move signifies its intent to protect children seeking refugee status in line with its international obligations.

 

During its previous UNHRC stint (2010-2013), Thailand advocated for enhanced capacity-building for human rights promotion. Now, it aims to leverage its historical strengths to secure another council term, hoping to impart regional and global best practices in human rights protection.

Does Thailand has Human Rights??? How about the overcrowded prisons? protestors in jail without a bail possibility for nothing? No freedom of speech, reading  and writings??  No equality for LHBTQ community, and hitting teachers with bamboo sticks in schools??  Underpaid work and not allowed to stay home for sickness or even burial as we could read this year, and that are not all cases but just a few. And the list can go on

Disappeared activists who turned up in the Mekong in concrete overcoats are all that's needed to disqualify Thailand from even applying for a seat at the UNHCR.

Y Quynh Bdap is a Vietnamese Montagnard activist being held in Bangkok Remand Prison. A couple of weeks ago a Thai court decided to approve a request by the Vietnamese government that he be extradited to Vietnam on charges of terrorism. His case is complex, but it can be assumed that at least some voting UN members are aware of his situation.

Returning Burmese refugees into the hands of the barbaric state who will either kill them or use them as human shields on the battlefront. That's the extent of their understanding human rights. Where is the compassion prescribed by Buddhism ?

Agreed, but have you seen the list of other countries on the UN Human Rights Council?

 

Thailand looks quite good compared to some of those...

Can you imagine how many homeless and underhoused US citizens we could place in the giant area. Quit it, kick them out, seize the land, build housing for poor Americans.
