Phuket taxi driver hits foreign man on airport zebra crossing
There's a Zebra Crossing outside the entrance to Bangkok Pattaya Hospital in Pattaya. I go there every 10 days to get treatment for a knee condition so I use a walking stick. Cars don't even stop for someone like me to get across. I now deliberately stick out my walking stick so if they continue they will hit it and hopefully do some damage. If they hit me at least I'm in the right place to get instant treatment. -

Bank of Thailand Interest Rate Cut Offers Boost to Tourism Sector
Thailand's tourism sector gets a boost following an unexpected interest rate cut by the Bank of Thailand, reducing the official rate by 25 basis points to 2.25% on Wednesday. This move is poised to energise the sector, allowing tour operators to expand and attract more tourists. Sanga Ruangwattanakul, Khao San Road Business Association president, stated that the rate cut positions the tourism industry for growth. Operators, burdened by previous high rates, now have an opportunity to borrow at lower costs to improve or expand their services, potentially increasing competitiveness. "The economy stands to benefit broadly, as people might cash out savings, boosting investment and consumer spending," stated Mr Sanga. The potential weakening of the baht, following the rate cut, could further encourage international tourism. Suksit Suvunditkul, Thai Hotels Association's southern chapter president, noted that tourists still see Thailand as an affordable destination despite previous price hikes. "The central bank needs to maintain the currency within acceptable limits to prevent negative impacts on tourism," remarked Mr Suksit. The tourism industry has learned from past challenges, such as the significant decline in Russian tourists due to the 2014 financial crisis. However, Mr Suksit remains optimistic, recalling the 1997 economic crisis when a favourable foreign exchange rate spurred tourism. Hotels in Phuket anticipate occupancy rates to soar to 80%, expecting better revenue from increased room rates. Meanwhile, forward bookings for Khao San Road remain moderate at 40% for November, indicating room for improvement, reported Bangkok Post. To catalyse growth, Mr Sanga suggests that the government collaborate on tourism campaigns. These could include tax incentives for hotel bookings, enhancing festival preparations, and improving infrastructure security, especially in anticipation of the cool season festivities. Must Read Thailand's Central Bank Cuts Interest Rate to Boost Economic Growth
It is possible that the market had anticipated a larger reduction in interest rates by the Thai Central Bank. Plus buyers of the Thai baht waited until the announcement was made. It may take some days before we see the baht reduce in value. -

Kamala on Fox News on Wednesday
I watched it. This was hilarious Baier: “If you’re turning the page…you’ve been in office for 3.5 years.” Harris: “Trump has been running for office…” Baier: “But you’ve been IN office!” Harris: “You and I both know what I’m talking about.” Baier: ““Actually i don’t know what you’re talking about.” -

Tourist Bus Catches Fire in Pak Chong
Another bus fire! We must assume it one that has not yet gone through the rigorous check up. Or maybe that was not necessary for diesel buses? Hmmm....until now it looks like! Just wondering how many years old this bus is, and how many miles it has been running on the same engine. Also, might there be any inspections that have been overlooked due to bribes because everyone knows it should be taken out of commission years ago? -

Thailand's Rapid Flood Recovery Earns Praise from Prime Minister
Er, not sure if you are in Chiangmai, but that is exactly what has been happening for at least 6 days now, but the scale of the devastation is staggering. Every street, Soi, lane, most businesses and homes have been severely affected. River mud, caked in places up to 10 cm + is piled everywhere and all I see, every day, including my village, thousands of Thai people (and foreigners to that extent), cleaning and clearing up. Each area has it own designated dumping area and the mounds of destroyed domestic goods and possessions is frightening. This is no normal flooding. In my 20 years living in CM, there have been 4 major floods, which have been 'containable', by which I mean the cleaning and clearing up have all been achieved fairly swiftly, but this time, the 4th time the flooding was swiftly followed by another, more devastating event, reaching some 5.6-8 m high, including the most southern reaches of Saraphi and Lamphun, some 20 kms away. The worst disaster in 50-70 years. The 'dump trucks' are working tirelessly to do exactly that which you so flippantly remark upon as, "Time now to .... They're probably doing much more than armchair criticisms. -

On a pedestrian crossing? I guess a double wai is called for in this case before the taxi driver is back on the road. -

British Citizenship
An update on my original post...my wife had her British Citizenship Ceremony back in May this year. The home office letter stated she could take 2 guests to her ceremony, however, when booking her ceremony our local mayor's office said she couldn't take any as their fire risk assessment didn't take into consideration, extra guests. We attended the ceremony but it wasn't the joyous occasion it should have been, so we wrote to our local MP who arranged for us to attend a further ceremony in August, along with the guests she was entitled to. If anyone's local council offices come up with the same excuse, contact your MP. You've paid for guests as part of your application, and no one should be denied the opportunity to have their loved ones on this special day. Private ceremony or not. Guemlum -
