Pattaya — A 24-year-old Jordanian man was arrested at a local fitness center in Pattaya for overstaying his visa by over 490 days.

Chonburi Immigration officers successfully arrested Mr. Yaha Abdel Rauof Yahya Alsakran, a 24-year-old Jordanian national, for overstaying his visa by 490 days on October 16th. The arrest took place at a fitness center in the Khao Phra Tamnak area in Pattaya.

The arrest followed a tip-off from concerned citizens who reported that a Jordanian man with an expired visa frequently visited a fitness center to hang out with his foreign friends.

Officers surveyed the area before spotting Mr. Yaha, who matched the concerned citizens’ description. They then approached and requested to check his passport and travel documents.

Might the gym have asked to see his passport at some point?

I have often felt hotel reception (for eg)  check such status, as there might be a little kickback  from immigration if they report an overstayer.

It's never police work that highlights the crime.  How do local police fill their day when there are no tips or gambling old ladies?

They used to sit in the Lek Hotel lobby enjoying the AC and TV years ago. Nowadays, I suspect their phones are involved.

Many officials run, or are involved in, business ventures on the side.

I was a tad amused a while back when the army were asking for a bigger budget and the response from the Finance Ministry was 'concentrate on your golf courses etc and make the money there'.

Surely knowing he was on 'overstay' he would have, or should have kept a more clandestine existence!

Or maybe a lot of these guys are just playing the long game, where they stay until they get caught, why bother with all the paperwork and time spent at immigration?
