Biden’s 'Garbage' Gaffe Could Give Trump a Political Edge

President Biden’s recent remarks, where he referred to former President Donald Trump’s supporters as “garbage,” have stirred political controversy, with Trump using the incident to rally his supporters. Speaking to a crowd in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Trump urged his supporters to “forgive” Biden for his choice of words.

“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters,” Biden said, pausing for a moment before continuing. “His, his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable and it’s un-American.”

The episode recalls Hillary Clinton’s infamous “deplorables” comment about Trump supporters during the 2016 election, which Trump referenced directly at his rally. “Wow. That’s terrible,” Trump said, adding, “And then she said irredeemable. That didn’t work out.”

At the rally, Trump leaned into a more forgiving stance, appearing to try to soften Biden’s comments while highlighting their divisive tone. “Please forgive him for not knowing what he said,” Trump told his crowd. He continued, “These people are terrible, terrible, terrible to say a thing like that. But he really doesn’t know. He really, honestly, he doesn’t. And I’m convinced that he likes me more than he likes Kamala. But that’s a terrible thing.” Trump’s crowd reacted, echoing sentiments from prior elections where such comments have historically rallied his base.

The White House quickly attempted to control the narrative, with spokesman Andrew Bates clarifying that Biden had been referring to “the hateful rhetoric” from Trump’s New York rally, not Trump supporters themselves. Bates explained, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s—his—his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American.” The White House’s efforts indicate awareness of the potential fallout from Biden’s phrasing.

President Biden, aware of the stir his comments had caused, also addressed the issue directly on social media, aiming to clarify his intentions. Writing on X (formerly Twitter), Biden said, “Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage—which is the only word I can think of to describe it. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.”

Despite the White House’s efforts to clarify, the incident underscores the delicate balance Biden must maintain in an already polarized political climate. Some analysts suggest that the comment could have already inflicted damage, giving Trump an opening to remind his base of past moments when mainstream politicians dismissed or criticized his supporters. As Biden works to unite a divided electorate, his “garbage” remark may be yet another instance where his words echo in ways that carry unintended consequences.

I didn't watch Harris speaking, except for a clip on the tv news, and it seems that it was just another Trump hatefest and nothing about HOW she would make life better. She says a lot about making life better, but seems lacking in HOW that will be achieved.

Guess you will never know cause you don’t bother to watch

I don't waste my time watching either candidate.  They both continue to make misleading and confusing comments.  You are entitled to interpret it anyway you want to convince yourself your candidate knows what they are talking about.

Harris made it very clear only that she made excuses for the comment. In Bidens speech it is clear what garbage he is talking about. The fact is that Harris is trying once again to cover up Bidens incompetence and hoping it does not hurt her chances to be voted for. It is called damage control what Harris is doing now. Making excuses and trying to make it look like it was taken out of context. If she did not do this, it will surely hit her campaign harder than her word salads and incompetence has done already.

After he spoke with Voto Latino, Biden posted on X to clarify that he had zeroed in on Hinchcliffe and to reiterate that Hinchcliffe's view of Latinos was wrong (archived😞

But that's not what you said, Joe. What you actually said was...

OMG do you think he is lying?

But he was discussing the comedians joke

Yes he is lying now to cover up a political mistake. He should know by now not to actually say out loud what he is really thinking, he's done it enough times with embarrassing consequences.

And let's be real, he only said what many Democrats think about Trump supporters.

Great point. If the comments on this web site are any indication then half the country doesn't want to put up with the other half. Fairly obvious what's going to happen. Just look at history.

He really needs to stop public speaking and go back to the beach.

He's so bad at this point that many people think he's deliberately sabotaging Harris' campaign.

Not that it will make any difference now, but the actual quote was, "The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter's,” Please note the apostrophe between the last word and the final s. That means he was only referring to one supporter, the one who made the original remark. Just FYI for anyone who is acquainted enough with grammar rules and what Biden's intent was in saying this.

Now I know your real identity. You are Karine Jean-Pierre. Or at least, you sound exactly like her. But that's all right.

Many people know that he is a gaffe machine and the GOP has taken his words out of context and milking it to the max. Many know he is not running for election and took his comment in stride.Harris's campaign is still emergizing the voters with polls trending in her direction.
