In an attack in Pattani province, five police officers were injured when a bomb planted on a motorcycle exploded on the Tanyongdalo Bridge in Yaring district at approximately 14:40 on 14 November.

Police Colonel Theeraphon Yindi, the Yaring Police Station Chief, confirmed that the incident occurred as a team from the Border Patrol Police Division 446 was passing through the bridge in a 6-wheeled vehicle. The bomb, set on a motorcycle, detonated just as the vehicle passed, injuring five officers.

The injured officers include:

• Sergeant Major Precha Khotnaen, the driver, who sustained shrapnel injuries to his head and face.

• Lieutenant Colonel Winai Chai Chanasongram, who suffered chest pain and ringing in his ears.

• Sergeant Major Anon Laemmae, who also reported chest pain and ringing in his ears.

• Staff Sergeant Kitipoom Morakot, who complained of chest pain and ringing in his ears.

• Staff Sergeant Muhammad Musodi, who similarly reported chest pain and ringing in his ears.

All five were promptly transported to Yaring Hospital for treatment.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the bomb was planted by unknown perpetrators, who parked a motorcycle fitted with an explosive device on the bridge. The officers, who were returning from an operation to transport wire from a military unit in the area, were targeted during their return journey.

Authorities believe the bombing was an attempt to escalate unrest in the region, and investigations into the motive and suspects are ongoing. The attack has once again highlighted the persistent security challenges in the southern provinces of Thailand.

I guess former PM Prayut's peace initiative that started with active dialog primarily with PM Yingluck (then passed on to succeeding regimes) with Malaysia and the insurgency leaderships is not going well, if at all given the RTM's traditional opposition to any dilution of Thailand's sovereign territory - being one proposal for the area described as the former Kingdom of Patani become semi-autonomous.

But then it took the Philippine government and two major armed groups, the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) decades for a final peace process. Coincidentally, Malaysia also participated in the peace initiative.
