Oh, dear.  Now Pattaya is 'teetering on the edge of chaos'.   Wasn't it just the other day that Pattaya residents were in a 'panic' about something or other.  And, before that something had 'shocked' all the residents, only after having just gotten over being 'terrorized' by something else I can't remember it was so forgettable.  I suspect we hardy residents will survive living on 'the edge of chaos', as well.

Meanwhile, enjoyed a good laugh with the article, especially the part about the venders just setting up shop again when the coppers leave.  Hmm.  Maybe don't leave then.  Establishing a regular police presence in such a popular tourist area could be just the ticket, and might even prevent us going over 'the edge of chaos'.  By the way, just thinking that The Edge of Chaos sounds like a good movie title for one of those cheesy disaster flicks.

Do I really need to go to Pattaya to tell the Police how to solve the problem? Just arrest them one by one, fine them 50,000 Baht, and confiscate their stalls. If they reoffend, jail! Problem solved!

The vendors typically rent the carts/stalls. What's the point in fining them? They don't have the money to pay and when they go away, a new sucker comes along to take their place. Like all criminal activity in Pattaya, the activity is linked to one of the crime syndicates that operates. They are everywhere; Extorting protection money, pimping, distributing drugs, trafficking women and children,  and operating  legitimate and money laundering businesses. They are well known to local authorities and are untouchable.

They (Police) can not enforce the blatant non wearing of underware in public, let alone beach food sellers.

Oh, I've done my best to keep up with all all the shenanigans going on in Pattaya, but there are SO many that it makes my head spin!

Why? The authorities are always quoting Pattaya as a "family friendly resort" so why shouldn't I? 🙂 I'm pretty sure that whoever coined that phrase must have had their tongue in their cheek whilst saying it!

It was just that you were about the 8th person to say it on the same thread, a little bit repetitive and very boring.

No, there's a couple of posts mentioning "family resort", and a few replies to them  - that's not the same as being "about the 8th person to say it".

However, I get your drift, but I can almost guarantee that within the next couple of days there will be a "happening" in Pattaya reported on here that will certainly not be depicting Patttaya as the "family friendly resort".

Oh man I remember my first few trips starting back in 2004.  Palm trees and shade trees were great.  There were flower beds all along the walkway.  There were metal benches one could sit on and relax and enjoy the sights.  The walkway on the North end was still usable and you could walk to Won Amat beach area.  It was such a pretty serene place.

Or someone at TAT liked the sound of it. Now it is commonly used and a bit of a giggle.

And, 'I can almost guarantee' that whatever the "happening" is, it will be blown way out of proportion, as this story was, by AN, and likely the Pattaya residents will be collectively described as 'shocked', 'outraged', 'terrorized', or some such other ridiculous, inappropriate moniker.

Some will think it's all harmless but I believe it was you who posted that 92% of the crime in Thailand was committed in Pattaya.  When I called you on it, you then stated that it was your 'impression' based on reading AN.  So, with you, and likely others, your very negative and also false 'impression' of Pattaya, and its amount of crime, directly relates to how AN covers Pattaya "happenings".

Pattaya is a big city, and has been in the top 20 of most visited cities in the world.  It hosts huge numbers of tourists.  Of course there will be "happenings", just as there are in Phuket, Bangkok, and other tourist destinations with large numbers of visitors.  I think I can 'almost guarantee' that if there are "happenings" on the same day in Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya, the one in Pattaya will get top billing.  Gotta maintain your 'impression' that 92% of the crime in Thailand occurs in Pattaya.

It also has a large foreign language media which is why the 'happenings' may seem disproportionate to the rest of the country.

They really need to put together a tourist pamphlet with all these wonderful oddities, it could attract just the right people from across the globe. Should read something like "Welcome to real Sin City!"

What part of utopia do you live in?

of crime committed in Thailand would appear to be committed in Pattaya - not sure if I said 82% - where would I get that figure from?

We "farangs"  get most of our news from AN, and if they seem unduly biased towards reporting the crime in Pattaya rather than anywhere else in the country, there must be a reason for it, why don't you ask them?

For your info, I live in one of the island resorts, and although there are quite a few ladyboys/transgender persons  working in the bars, I never see or hear of the kind of trouble here that seems to happpen in Pattaya on a regular basis (Indians - ladyboy - gold necklace - theft). I am not saying that it doesn't happen, in the same way that I have never actually seen a fight in all the 20 years that I have been here doesn't mean to say that they don't happen - just that I have never seen one. Maybe that is why there are seldom reports of bag/necklace snatches, muggings, beatings up by bouncers/taxi drivers on AN because they rarely happen here? And I do go to the bar areas frequently (2 or 3 times a week) so it's not like I am living the life of a hermit in my Utopia!

Someone a while ago implied that I had not even been to Pattaya - not true - I was there for 2 or 3 days with a couple of mates a few years ago, and although I enjoyed it, I won't be rushing back - I certainly didn't feel as safe there as I do in "my Utopia"!

I believe it was 92%, not 82%.  Whichever, like you, I have no idea where you might have pulled that ludicrous Pattaya crime figure from, although I could probably take a guess.

Didn't take long:- From today's headline news on AN:-

"An intoxicated tourist was apprehended in Pattaya following an alleged assault on a restaurant owner’s husband."

And no "shocked:,  "outraged", or otherwis eoffeneded netizens mentioned.

Just another day at the "family friendly resort", really!

I would probably have said "approximately", and you memory is no better than mine  - when I say I can't remember - you immediately bang another 10% on top!

Thank you for making my point.  In the same set of stories, there was one about a foreign tourist falling to their death at a Korat mall.  That was buried way down in the list of stories while, of course, the very minor Pattaya story about a drunk tourist was the top story of the day.  You are correct that Pattaya residents were left out this time.  Possibly because we were still 'shocked' and in a 'panic' regarding the minor condo fire the day before.
