Not everybody has 30k sitting idle, plus the parents have other expenses to handle, relative to the situation.

Insurance may be?

A young person can easily get health/accident insurance. Why doesn't he have such?

I believe the article mentions he was insured but it would not cover all cost n

If there is no need, insurance won't cover trip home for Xmas. Med. treatment in TH is sophisticated enough to fix him.

Don´t worry, I know what it is. Just thought you were incapable of it.

There we go - thats a better response....   congratulations...

Now, thats out of your system...  ready to move on with the topic and continue to make up reasons to blame the Brit for getting into this situation.

Never blamed him for getting into the situation he find himself in. Just blamed him for not have enough cover. So, again you don´t understand what you read.

Agreed...  Although I personally would never want to rely on a scheme such as this to ensure the best medical care in an emergency - everyone knows the improtance of full health / medical Insurance to protect from such issues.

I also wonder who was responsible for the motorcycle accident - if a 3rd party was at fault, could they be held accountable for the costs ?... If I'm not mistaken the compulsory insurance (Por-Ror-Bor) only covers medical costs up to a certain amount.

What is somewhat grinding with this story is that the hospitals know what needs to be done to give this lad a better shot at surviving, but are putting that on hold while waiting for a bill to be paid - IMO that is outrageously mercenary, they can just move the guy, save his life and chase up the costs afterward.

If people are going to argue that point - be reminded:

- In 2023 the Revenue from Medical Tourism to Thailand was 29 Billion Baht.

- Burden of unpaid medical bills estimated at 300 to 400 Million Baht - about 1% of the total revenue.

The Thai Medical industry is not hurting by any means because of people such as this guy who need urgent medical care.

I have a German friend who took a holiday in the USA, while riding a push bike a woman opened her car door without looking and he somersaulted over the door and landed on his back squashing nerves in his vertebrae, he couldn't feel his legs and was taken to hospital. After the examination the surgeon told him he had to be operated on his spine immediately to stop nerve damage otherwise he may never walk again. He was insured through his German company and had an insurance card to show them but they wouldn't operate until they had confirmation through the German embassy that they would be reimbursed. It took 4 days, he had to telephone his company who contacted the insurance to explained what had to be done, this was on a Friday evening (German time) the insurance telexed the German embassy with assurance of payment who then telexed the hospital. The operation was only partially successful due to the long wait, his right leg is normal but he has no feeling in the left leg, he now walks with a strange limp, a floppy left leg. If they had operated immediately as they would have done anywhere in "socialist" Europe he would have been fine......the surgeon was most apologetic.

I’ve lived here for 18 years, some more than 1 mill kms on the roads here I’m a pickup truck and scooters and big bikes, had 3 accidents on the scooter, all 3 caused by other people, pulling out and not looking, just had gravel rash in all 3 , and a week in bed at most, to lose a leg he must have hit something very hard and been speeding, maybe slightly drunk, so now he wants the public to pay his expenses….nope!

More sanctimonious drivel.
On the face of it, the more logical assumption would be that something hit him sideways on and smashed his leg, but of course that wouldn’t suit your agenda

Thats outrageous - disgusting behavior... It shows how mercenary the hospitals have become.

They should be held accountable for allowing such delays.

Is it sensible enough to ask you to produce such information that I´ve posted? Maybe harder than laughing, and much easier to ignore.

Seriously ??? - you can't see the possibility that someone else was travelling at speed 'hit him from the side' which crushed his leg ???

There's no information or report regarding the accident - so anything could have happend.

It could be another parties fault or no one else involved at all...

... But.. you've managed to shoe-horn drunk riding and speeding to justify blaming him without any basis.

I've said already - I don't want to waste time with a bigot Brit-basher...

Argue the topic sensibly...   we're going too far off track with your prejudice stupidity.

We are going of track, because you accuse me of things I have not done. Stand up for it, and tell me where I posted that I blamed the guy for what has happened to him. That´s not off topic at all.

You are the one that can´t to that, and it hurts too much for you to admit.

I am not anti-British at all, as long as I don´t have to read about d1ckheads of the nationality every, or every second day of the year. If that continues, then you will continue to hear criticism about that as well. That would have happened with any other western nationality as well, except Russians, as they are of the chart crazy in general. That´s nothing anti-British about that. Just that your nationality pops up more frequent, and you do not tolerate criticism about it.

As I see it, apparently not ignored. If so, there would not have been a reply at all. And you are calling me stupid?

But he is right...............🤔

Yes, I rather think it's typical American behaviour, the card he showed them had a contact telephone number and he begged them to contact his insurance but he was told that rather than rely on a German insurance company they didn't know they wanted written confirmation of payment from the German embassy so in the event of difficulties getting payment the German state as a 'gold standard' would have to pay. God help us if the NHS has any business dealings with the Americans.

But he is right...............🤔

Indeed - If this was the first time he'd posted something negative towards a brit, then I'd be calling him out for the insensitivity and stupidity of his comments...

However, he has a long history of anti-British sentiment in the past and has been previously called out for that by numerous posters in the past.

Maybe his comment was not consciously anti-British - however, his silence on other threads when it is another nationality indicates his focus is triggered when the word 'British' appears in the headline.

Regardless of whether this thread is about a Brit or not - his comments someone fighting for their life are just nasty, he's being called out for that level of callousness too !!!

Putting critical care on hold is outrageous - its wrong on so many levels.

Even for non-critical care, I just have the treatment and then claim on insurance becase they take too long to provide pre-authorisation....  (knee op a few months back - I knew pre-authorisation would take days when I could have the operation the following day - in the UK the wait would have been months, perhaps over a year).

This perhaps highlights the need even more to have solid cover - just to ensure there is no waiting around.

In the case you describe - I wonder if there is no a need for Germans to carry an Embassy letter to confirm their insurance (which of course they are unlikely to give until absolutely necessary).

I can't imagine the frustration of being in such a situation and then the anger when finding out human road-blocks have had a direct impact on wellbeing.

All the trappings of a backpacker I think.

Been here since 2016?. This has got to be the dumbest professional that has ever existed. Did he live in a shoe box? Under a bridge? NO.

I'm very sorry that he's having a hard time.  He was young enough, and educated enough to of had proper insurance. Also he was teaching?  Something is not right here!!!

Since they raised 11k on  fund raising , the family need only about 19k. I find it very hard to believe that a family could not find that. I mean I personally have credit cards that I could put on about 16k in emergencies, I think its more likely the family do not want to go into debt for him

This is what young people do.

Enjoying his life to the full before he turns into a boring old fart like the selfish majority on here.
