Perhaps - by Law any hosptial (private or public) are obliged to render medical care in the first 72 hours.

Only them once stabilised can a private facility look at transferring a patient to a government facility if cost becomes a concern.

In this case its not clear if the lad is in a private or government hospital - but, looking at the photo (on first page of this thread) it looks as though he is on a ward in a government hospital.

If it's serious and his isn't the doctors once you're in the private hospital are reluctant to send you to a government hospital. Almost impossible to transfer you back to a government hospital once you're in the private. Unless you're able to walk out yourself with your family members

At first I need to wish him well. Such an accident and injuries, I wish nobody.

But, i find this kind of fundraising disgusting.

And again its a Brit. Don't they know anything of insurance. Are they travelling without any knowledge of the country they go. Not prepare anything?

Going brainless to Thailand, this is not a teacher, it's a joke.

If he was working at a reputable school he would have had private health insurance through the school. Obviously he's not

This is what young people do.

Enjoying his life to the full before he turns into a boring old fart like the selfish majority on here.

No, when I was young, I got two degrees...Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, worked three jobs through college, then got a real job and then travel.  OK!

You have called him stupid for buying a 'cheap charlie insurance' - thus blaming him being in the predicament he is in.

You alluded to him not having a licence and not wearing a helmet - again potentially blaming him (even though no head injuries reported).

You commented further that he was stupid.

Meanwhile you get so bent out of shape when I have called you out for making dumb comments while you fail to see your own hypocrisy, why is that ? because you are doubling down in your bigoted anti-British agenda and arguing me, not the subject -  if this guy was not a Brit I very much doubt you'd be so quick to condemn him.

I've called Gottrid out previously about comments he made about an abuse case some time back which backfired on him. He promptly tried to row back on them after an avalanche of criticism. Evasive to say the least when faced with logical reason debunking his little rants, anti-Brit or other BS!  Unfortunately the ignore function doesn't hide replies to other posters like you....he hasn't changed one iota by the looks of it LOL.

So true proton, only an idiot gets on a motorbike in Thailand. You have to make a death wish to ride a motorbike.

If you have genuine common sense you have a very good chance of being safe on the road.

No insurance? Just irresponsible and now others (including his family) have to help him out

Where does it say that he had no insurance?

If you want charity go to a charity hospital. Modern medicine is a business, and has rules and regulations which don't include doing expensive operations because they feel sorry for a patient. Of course it's mercenary- that's how business is now.

If you took out a loan from a bank and couldn't pay it back, do you expect the bank to let you off just because you are in a bad way?

they can just move the guy, save his life and chase up the costs afterward.

Seriously? They could keep him in prison till he paid the bill, but then all the bleeding hearts would be complaining about that.

Maybe if the medical profession wasn't so greedy and upping the bill when they see a white face.

Yeah, you are right! But in the west, a million Baht is almost nothing at all.

Don't you realise how many people are living in poverty in the UK? Power bills, council tax etc, etc, etc.

I believe the article mentions he was insured but it would not cover all cost n

It won't cover any of it if he was riding without a license or helmet.

Even then, unless he has additional insurance over and above Por Ror Bor, his best chance of covering (some of) his bills is the fact that he lost his leg.

Quote

  • Medical expenses = up to ฿80,000
  • Daily compensation = ฿200 per day (up to 20 days) up to ฿4,000
  • Loss of 2 body parts = ฿300,000 / loss of 1 body part = ฿250,000 / loss of a finger or more = ฿200,000

Unless I have missed something he is in no fit state to claim any insurance and a good chance he never will be. I sincerely hope he eventually gets well enough to have some sort of a life. Good luck to him.

Looking at the photos it appears he is awake, what much more is required?

I would suggest his problem is not understanding how to claim off Por Ror Bor, as if he had additional insurance it's a simple matter to call the claim number.

The people that donate to these go fund me schemes are never forced to donate. You either give or don't give, very few people know who or how much was donated and generally if you donate nobody will know who or how much.

I am not saying that there should be no go fund me's, every case is different, but the people who arrange all these go fund me's, how much are they taking for themselves? Are there already people operating a business here? Are there people getting rich through this? That is a question people should be asking before they contribute to this fund.

Too many cases of under or no insurance,I wouldn't give them one Baht.

If insurance companies would stop their small print and legal jargon nonsense, be fair and upfront with people, then maybe people would be more inclined to take out an insurance policy.

I have a German friend who took a holiday in the USA, while riding a push bike a woman opened her car door without looking and he somersaulted over the door and landed on his back squashing nerves in his vertebrae, he couldn't feel his legs and was taken to hospital. After the examination the surgeon told him he had to be operated on his spine immediately to stop nerve damage otherwise he may never walk again. He was insured through his German company and had an insurance card to show them but they wouldn't operate until they had confirmation through the German embassy that they would be reimbursed. It took 4 days, he had to telephone his company who contacted the insurance to explained what had to be done, this was on a Friday evening (German time) the insurance telexed the German embassy with assurance of payment who then telexed the hospital. The operation was only partially successful due to the long wait, his right leg is normal but he has no feeling in the left leg, he now walks with a strange limp, a floppy left leg. If they had operated immediately as they would have done anywhere in "socialist" Europe he would have been fine......the surgeon was most apologetic.

This post does not surprise me in the least. It just proves one of the reasons why insurance companies get such a bad name.

The insurance company wasn't to blame, they immediately confirmed they would pay, it was the American money grabbing ideology of the hospital that wanted an assurance from the German embassy first before they started treatment which caused the delay.

How hard is it to know that insurance will be invalid if you are not riding legally? No helmet, no license for a start, then there are all the chumps that think it's ok to ride drunk or drug impaired because they see everyone else at it?

As the saying goes, "Monkey see, Monkey do".

You don't *have* to be an idiot.

I made my post before I seen that photo, but I can still understand he may be too ill to deal with arguing with insurance companies who are always looking at for excuses not to pay.

Look at the injuries he has.

"they immediately confirmed they would pay,"  Yes! After four days, they should have started any treatment immediately, no excuses.

You're assuming he has anything more than compulsory insurance. I'm assuming he hasn't.

When I read the post and the BBC report, it did not say he was working at a school, it said he was ' recruiting ' and placing potential teachers in teaching positions in Thailand, so, I took that as freelancing.

If he was self-employed, he wasn't teaching at a school and no school insurance would have been provided.
