I watched a podcast where it was explained to the host what tariffs really are and how they work.

The host was stunned after he realized it is only going to hurt the American consumers!

I was stunned also,by the lack of knowledge of a lot of Americans.

No I do not accept that. Thailand is very cheap to live. It's certainly a lot cheaper than America or the UK, despite Thailand having huge import tariffs on many foreign goods.

The USA blames Mexico for its problem at the border. it's a made in USA problem,. Someone is buying the drugs from Mexico and hiring the  unauthorized migrants. Almost all of the firearms seized in Mexico come from the USA. There has been a reduction of migrants at the US border since last June. In fact the problem isn't with new migrants, but rests with the population already in the USA.

I can remember buying a Mitsubishi single cab Triton in Australia, IIRC about 2006. The on road cost was AUD 18,500. Australia had no tariffs on imported vehicles.

It was built in Thailand. If I had bought it there , at the prevailing exchange rate, it would have cost AUD 24,000.

Tariffs invariably hurt the people of the country that imposes them.

So you are saying buying a Thai built truck in Australia was cheaper than buying a Thai built truck in Thailand?

 

If so, what does that have to do with import tariffs? Even if Australia had import tariffs it would have likely cost around the same.

Please show us how Trumps tariffs brought higher prices in the past in a macroeconomic sense.

Please advise as to what other factors may have contributed to a loss of manufacturing jobs (if true) under Trump.
