German Tourist Bitten While Swimming at Nang Thong Beach, Phang Nga

A 57-year-old German tourist, Elke Marion Maier, was bitten on the left leg by an unidentified marine creature while swimming at Nang Thong Beach in Khao Lak, Phang Nga province. The incident left her with a deep wound, approximately 15 centimetres wide and 30 centimetres long.
 

Rescue workers from the Petchkasem Foundation transported the injured woman to a local hospital for initial treatment before she was transferred to a facility in Phuket for further care.

 

Mr. Siwat Rawangkun, District Chief of Takua Pa, and other officials, including Mr. Lertsak Pongklin, President of the Phang Nga Tourism Business Association, and Ms. Jittima Khongphan, a village head, visited the scene following the incident.

 

According to Mr. Athiti Pinyo, a lifeguard at a nearby hotel, the victim called for help while swimming in chest-deep water. “We immediately rushed to help her. Upon bringing her ashore, we found significant bite marks on her left leg,” Mr. Athiti stated.

 

Authorities suspect the bite may have been caused by either a shark or large fish, but further investigation is needed. Officials have sent photos and details of the wounds to marine experts to identify the species responsible.

 

This incident is reminiscent of a similar case in 2020 at the same beach. In response, red flags have been placed along the beach to warn swimmers, and hotels in the area have been instructed to inform their guests to exercise caution.

 

Mr. Lertsak Pongklin urged tourists to be vigilant. “We’ve coordinated with hotels and water sports training centres to ensure tourists are made aware of the situation. For the next few days, we advise everyone to be cautious while swimming,” he said.

 

Authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the incident and to enhance safety measures for tourists.

Very rare. Reef sharks are harmless. It's impossible to swim close in Thailand. Very skittish. Maybe a baby bull or leopard shark. Nothing to eat in the water anymore

 

Triggerfish is remote possibility not bc they won't bite but I doubt he was near a reef.

AFAIR jellyfish have no teeth, so they will sting you. Large fish OTOH (sharks etc) have teeth and can bite you.

 

I do agree about the nasty bite.

Such as ? In over 20 years of holidays around the Med , I never had a problem with sea creatures or rip tides .

Well Im fat old and slow, so whatever is hungry Id be right there. Because you "never" had a problem it would mean I am the first ever at Le Morte Homme Beach outside Cannes to die screaming in a spray of blood as I am savagely torn limb from limb by ravenous orcas as they gobble my liver and wear my head as a trophy like they do in Washington State

There have been over 50 shark attacks off Italy since 1900

11 of these were fatal

Has Italy moved out of the Med????

Only seen 1 leopard shark in Thai waters.  Lionfish are way more of a concern.

I practice my water sports here in Thailand because it's a lot cheaper since i found a reasonably priced rubber sheet shop.
