I have always thought it was their way of knowing you at least had access to money when needed.

Since ( as of now) they still do not require health insurance it is not a bad idea for them to require a deposit.

 

The only surprising thing actually is as other have said you only need to have it deposited for a couple of months.

 

I have long since thought that someday health insurance will be required & since many do not qualify due to preexisting, age, etc etc That they may one day require those without insurance to leave that deposit in place year round as a backup should emergency medical be required.

 

Would at least cut down on the " Go Fund Me"  insurance policies

What I do have is more invested in a country than a person who is renting a box in some apartment building. Doesn't make me any better or worse, but should be taken into account. Same as the OP who has kids here, im guessing he's putting them through the education system, that's a big enough commitment.

 

Some kind of extension process based upon commitment might be more applicable I wouldn't say that that shouldn't be connected to financials but not dependant. Anyway, it won't change, too much money to be made on the side from retired folks who don't have the money in the bank and use other means.

I see that it has become extremely challenging for married guys to enter the country. I have never tried to print out bank statements when outside Thailand. Have no idea how to do it. Updating bank book to show the balance on the same day is simply impossible.

But I see that anyone can enter Thailand with Transit visa. It is cheap, it does not have any significant requirements. Is it possible to get Marriage extension in Thailand for transit visa holders? If yes, it would be visa of choice to enter the country for Married guys.

The above is very common in Thailand, and probably much of SEA.  Is that man really such a bad person?  Is a he a massive drain on Thailand?  Does his life of working in Thailand, taking care of a Thai wife, and raising Thai children mean so little?  Is he really entitled to nothing?  Only giving and giving until he dies?

I think it's fair enough for visa based on having a child.

 

400k isn't a lot, nor is 40k a month salary. 

 

I don't see why we should need to show funds for having a wife though. She should have her own money

I think it's pretty mean, TBH.  Once you have a Thai wife and Thai kids, visas shouldn't be something you have to worry about at all, let alone jump through hoops to get. 

 

If Thailand is so worried about foreigners, why are they allowed to marry or impregnate locals in the first place?

 

I can only assume that people are so blasé about child-rearing, they don't really care if a husband/father is able to remain in Thailand or not.  Pretty sad.

For 14 years I made my marriage visas in Bangkok. It got to staged where it was p**sing me right off given the required paper work and at times the attitude of the immigration officers. Many times I had a complete check list and they wanted something else. I moved to Pattaya and a friend of mine suggested that I should use an agent. That was 10 years ago and I've never had any problems since I made that decision.

The real irony of this income requirement is that, prior to the withdrawal of the embassy letters we didn't have to prove that we were remitting any money into Thailand at all.

 

All we we needed to do was present the letter showing that we had an income, (or in some cases we were claiming that we had one)

Spend as much as you can afford to lose!

I use 400k in the bank method and built  a house 6 years ago , I made sure I was marrying the right Thai so I lived with her for 8 years prior in a apartment.

If it ever came down to requiring falangs to meet more funds or mandatory health insurance  to get a Non O visa based on marriage,I could also swing that!

It is possible, but it doesn't leave much for holiday budget or to much western food choices or quality. You basically living Thai style 365 days a year.
