What are your favorite communities in Thailand?

Featured Replies

I've been living in Pattaya for many years, and finally burned out on the expat community. I'm not a drinker, humanistic in politics and just never felt I fit in.

I loved living in Chiang Mai where the Thais and ex-pats are mellow. It was easy to make friends, but the smoke season made me so sick I couldn't cope.

Phuket was fun long ago but way to touristy for me now, and I would expect the same of Samui. Also a bit pricey.

So where's next for a mellow lifestyle in beautiful surroundings that's not too pricy? I'd like to pay under 18k/month for a nice 1 bedroom place with a view.  Krabbi looks nice - how is it to live there?  How about Hua Hin, Bang Saray, Rayong?  For folks that have lived around, I'd appreciate your comparisons. Thanks!

I live in Thailand Thailand not tourist Thailand. The only community are Thais and I'm happy with this.

In Rayong it's easy to find nice condos directly on the beach with good amenities.

How do rental prices compare to Pattaya?

Guess it depends on how you want to live and your lifestyle. For a slower pace Rayong area which includes Ban Chang where having a car is sorta needed, depending vs. Pattaya. You'll probably get more for your money in Rayong.

The smoke gets pretty nasty up here but for me the other things you mentioned out weigh it at least at this point

Rayong today;

"PM2.5 concentration is currently 5 times the World Health Organization annual PM2.5 guideline value.

Too much heavy industries and oil related business.

The beach often filthy of garbage.

Go and see. Maybe you like it. Don't buy before renting a year or so first. Hard to sell.

Bang Sare is much better choice! I spent two winters there. Navy brings security.

Go to Brazil, and if you are a lone wolf, you got only yourself to think of. Nice climate, clean air, healthy food, affordable prices, but the negative, you got limited safe areas, and can not travel or walk everywhere as free as you do in Thailand.

I lived near CMU for seven years. The effect on my health got stronger every year- maybe as I aged. I got to where i had a headache and a little nauseous for several weeks so moved to the coast. Otherwise it was the favorite of anywhere in Thailand I lived.

It’s definitely worse over there. The smoke backs up against the hill and stagnates.

If wanting to avoid smoky season, need to head south, Chumphon and below.  Never lived that far south, but go there quite a bit and like it.  The non touristy area, which there are few of actually.  Places I would consider living at;

Chumphon

Surat Thani

Phang nga

Krabi

What's the expat living scene in Chumphon?  Where in Chumphon? I don't think I've ever heard a farang speak of living there.

I prefer Thung Wuan Laen beach, where there is some foreigners and a few restaurants you can get western food, and also buy decent bread actually a Norwegian recipe.

Also a good choice could be Bang Saphaan. Always enjoyed riding through there

Depends if wanting rural or city living.  Hummin already mentioned TWL Beach, 2nd favorite gulf beach, behind Ban Krut, and was a 4X a year favorite pit stop on the way to/from Phuket.   If surf cooperating, didn't even bother going to Phuket.

Chumphon would be my first choice.  Having everything you need or want.  Large enough to have a nightlife, though I never looked, as always traveled as a family.  I don't pay attention to expats, so couldn't comment on them.  Nightlife probably doesn't cater to farangs, and a good thing.  Probably why off the farang radar.   For me, the less the better IMHO.

Only 30 usd to go n see. DMK to CJM.

I'm not really hoping for high-quality expats, I  just want to get away from the drunken Lumoxes that have colonized Pattaya. I think the demographics have actually improved with so many Russian families moving into the neighborhood, but there are still a lot more drunken slobs than I care to live amongst.
