I've had enough of the Tourist Ghettos in Thailand!

Barboy,

You can exchange the farang ghetto for a more simple life in the countryside or Thai village.

2 distinct benefits:

1.  Yabba heads plentiful so they know exactly who to go to for a loan or to steal from.

2.  Thais entering your home.  Uninvited, without permission for any reason. Very social.  Ditto for loans.  You’re better than a bank.

Do you speak from experience?

Enough is Enough.

Tourist ghettos no more, I am done with them, the tourists (especially you know who) are destroying this beautiful country with their terrible manners, unruly kids and general disregard for others around them and the environment. I need some new scenery or I am going to go mad (if I haven't already reached that point)..

I would like to enlist the help of fellow AN members in asking where do you recommend I go with the following stipulations:

1. Hardly any farangs in sight, especially tourists.

2. Remote places, can be mountainous, towns, city, beach, jungle, whatever.

3. Reasonable food

4. Reasonable room rates

5. Real local people, no tourist BS.

I welcome any and all input into this topic. Finally the tourist ghettos have worn me down - it took a while but it has finally happened. Now I understand Joe who retires way out in the sticks on a nice plot of land and a couple water buffalo with his young thai bride. There is something real in that kind of life that the ghetto just cannot provide.

Wherever the tourists are going this high season, I'm not. I want a comprehensive list of places that are truly off the beaten track.

Thank you in advance!

North east Thailand along the Mekong. Go to Mae Sai and turn east. Avoid the Golden Triangle abomination.

What's such an abomination about the golden triangle?

I kinda like the flowers there....

It's the ultimate tourist trap. You obviously never been there.

..

What do they say about presumption being the mother of all....

No presumption involved, it's an abomination.

If you are just going to attack anyone stupid enough to reply to your request, I hope you get no other replies, Bob.

Personally, no.

Enough threads on the subjects I have mentioned throughout the years.

No desire whatsoever for village life.

If one does, good for them.

We’ve never seen this vicious side of you Bob.

Should we steer clear?

I did, if you don't like it, go elsewhere.

That's a rude response to someone seeking advice of his fellow farang. Most of us who have known Thailand and are more senior would likely avoid Pattaya which sounds like the Wild West now or disturbing Phuket. But Hua Hin, Krabi etc gets good remarks. Farang who end up on a farm in a remote village with mud, chickens, flies, extended family. The consensus is never good.

I intend to explore Isan a lot in the coming months.

Anywhere in particular you would recommend?

Somewhere very close to a big bank with lots of cash machines, day in, day out. Sorry just joking.

No it is a fair response to someone that constantly complains and starts innuendo about "other" groups of falangs. This is race baiting nonsense.

I like Mae Hong Son province with the exception of Pai, although Pai does have the best quality weed. MHS city is one of the cheapest places and has the most friendly people I have met in Thailand. Many of the locals speak English. The problem with the North is the smoke burning season.

There are nice mountain areas and quite rural zones in Trang province with close access to beaches and good food.

Sichon and Khanom are like Samui years ago but they are on social media a lot so tourist are soon to follow.

You may want to check out Substack writers for ideas.

Are you living there?

Don't worry, not planning to visit.

Hey. I am still on a road trip Northern Thailand. Some really quiet roads and hardly any  Farang up here and everything very cheap, especially around Sapan, Bo Kleau  areas. Now in Chaing Khan, a few farang but different class, no drunk yobos.

I have a rented house there - been in that village back and forth since 2014, house rented since 2017. I'm currently in Hua Hin, need to head back to Scotland soon due to an illness in the family.

What's your thoughts on Fang? It gets bypassed ( literally ) by everyone. To me it's a great place to base yourself with access to Mae Ai, Tha Ton, Doe Mae Salong all within striking distance. Fang also has a good nightlife scene.

Doi Lang is well worth a visit too - I'm on that mountain a couple of times every year at the restaurant which overlooks Myanmar. Great place.

Head for Chiang Saen for the Saturday night riverside market. Chill out and watch the lights of Laos' casinos, eat on the steps next to the river. Give yourself a treat and go to the Opium Museum just out of town ( there's two ). The one out of town is well worth a visit. Its past the Golden Triangle viewing on the left hand side heading to Mae Sai.
