Newly released body camera footage sheds light on a fatal incident involving New York corrections officers and an inmate, Robert Brooks, who died the morning after the violent encounter at Marcy Correctional Facility. The disturbing footage appears to show Brooks, a 43-year-old inmate, subjected to a brutal assault while restrained.

On December 10, Brooks was pronounced dead following an attack captured on video the previous day. The footage, released by New York Attorney General Letitia James, shows corrections officers repeatedly striking Brooks, who was handcuffed and seated on an examination table. Some clips depict officers hitting him in the face and groin. At one point, a prison officer seems to place an object in Brooks' mouth before delivering additional blows. Another officer is seen using a shoe to strike him in the stomach, and one individual forcibly lifts Brooks by the neck before slamming him back onto the table.

The cause of death, determined by preliminary examinations, was listed as "asphyxia due to compression of the neck." However, details about why Brooks was initially brought to the medical facility remain unclear, as the videos lack audio.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation. Following an internal review, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced the termination of 13 officers and a prison nurse involved in the assault. In a statement, she expressed being "outraged and horrified" by the events. "The state of New York has zero tolerance for individuals who break the law, and I am committed to holding everyone involved fully accountable," Hochul said.

Attorney General James, whose office has launched an investigation, acknowledged the gravity of releasing such footage. "I do not take lightly the release of this video, especially in the middle of the holiday season," James said. She emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability, stating, "I release the videos because I have a responsibility and duty to provide the Brooks family, their loved ones, and all New Yorkers with transparency and accountability."

Brooks had been serving a 12-year sentence for first-degree assault and had been transferred to Marcy Correctional Facility from a nearby facility on the same day as the assault. Elizabeth Mazur, the attorney representing Brooks' family, described the footage as a harrowing depiction of excessive violence. "The videos show the horrific and extreme nature of the deadly attack," Mazur said. She further remarked, "He deserved to live, and everyone else living in Marcy Correctional Facility deserves to know they do not have to live in fear of violence at the hands of prison staff."

The union representing state prison workers called the footage "incomprehensible," underscoring the shock felt across communities. The incident has reignited discussions on prison reform and the accountability of correctional staff in New York and beyond.

That should be good for a few million $$$ ... best day of his short life, for taking care of his family :coffee1:

And people don't trust people in authority ... who would have thought :cheesy:

This is typical American garbage reporting. Present a story with no details, must be white on black violence (preferably a police officer involved) and then throw it to the public as red meat. For all we know this prisoner just killed someone in jail but we're supposed to have sympathy for him?

Sorry I don't care until they provide more details, maybe he deserved it, maybe the cops are murderers but it's too early to know.

How many more details do you need, besides a vid showing them beating a handcuffed prisoner to death.

I'm a big fan of 'don't do the crime if you can't do the time', or 'predator criminals shouldn't be allowed to walk among us'  ... but I think they may have taken it just a wee bit too far :coffee1:

Although I have to admit, I do like the airplay it's getting, and may deter some youngin from going down a criminal path.

Nothing really here to make any judgements. Was the inmate defending himself or did he instigate the confrontation. WTF knows...  I think the violence was too much but I wasn't there and must be hard to apply the exact type of violence that is appropriate.  Lesson  - don't go to prison and if you do don't fight with officers.

Looks like the officer cleaning the prisoners face was bitten and the officer reacted poorly.  Not sure...

Absolutely not. However beating up prisoners is not only morally wrong, but it's also illegal. Prisoners have the right to be treated humanely, and officers who violate this right can be subject to criminal charges. You did notice that in the clear as day video capture? Obviously being a prison officer is a tough job and doesn't attract the sharpest tools, as evidenced by these morons who allowed it to be filmed.

I wonder how they will like it among the prison population if they get jail time. F****ng barbarians.

What ever the guy did, he was outnumbered, on his back, restrained in handcuffs, and had no way of defending himself. Attacked by multiple thugs, who all it seemed couldn't wait to get their kick or punch in, while others stood laughing. Lifting him by the neck like that showed no concern for his safety, and was pure malice..

A certain percentage of the population enjoys hurting people.

Maybe they were bullies in HS.

Maybe bullied themselves.

They become cops.

Or whatever.

Similar to this Luigi guy who shot the health man. Clear video = guilty.

Please give us stats that show the numbers of officials committing crimes vis a vis common criminals.

You don’t need numbers.

You can discus the actual case that is the subject of this thread.

In USA about 50 cops/yr killed by guns in line of duty.

Cops kill >1000 citizens, 1/2 of whom are not criminals.

& they shoot & kill 10,000 dogs.

Just a few of hundreds, even thousands of cases of people being mistreated by brutal or bad cops.

Why?

Is it meant to be competition with the winners killing the most people?

No its meant to say that stuff like this is the exception vs the norm. Wonder what the dude was in prison for?

There are rotten apples in every profession. Some police like the power they are given. Some abuse it.

Not to worry, Trump will pardon them. He's had plenty of practice pardoning criminals.

For all you know this guy murdered a bunch of kids and then stabbed another inmate and then finally spit in their face so they had enough. You could literally be defending the worst scum on the planet right now because the media is misleading you. Not saying that is happening but it could be and that''s why the American media is garbage.

so nearly two random citizens are killed every day by police? We should be hearing these stories back to back daily then. I don't know where that number came from but it's probably nonsense.

The worst scum are those that abuse the laws, they are suppose to uphold.   Being MSM isn't stating what he was in prison for, then I'm guessing it wasn't too serious.
