Chinese Driver Hits and Kills Woman Crossing Road Near Footbridge in Pattaya

Pol Lt. Puttharak Sonkamhan, an investigator fromPattaya City Police Station, received a report at approximately 11.30 on January 2, of a fatal road collision. The incident occurred on Sukhumvit Road, near the South Pattaya Lotus store.

 

Upon arriving at the scene with rescue workers from the Sawang Boriboon Foundation, authorities found the body of a woman, approximately 50 years old, on the central reservation of the road. Her legs were broken, and her face was covered in blood. No identification documents were found on her. Scattered nearby were snacks, packets of instant noodles, and cans of beer.

 

Approximately 60 metres from the body, officers discovered a grey Mazda car registered in Chonburi. The vehicle’s windscreen was shattered, and the front right bumper was damaged. A cloth shopping bag was also found stuck to the car.

 

The driver, a 35-year-old Chinese man, was detained and taken to Pattaya City Police Station for an alcohol test. His Thai female companion, who was in the car at the time, told police they were returning to their accommodation in Pattaya before heading back to Bangkok. She admitted that both she and another passenger were preoccupied with their phones when the collision occurred.

 

CCTV footage revealed that the deceased woman had been running across the road from the South Pattaya Lotus store, opting not to use the nearby footbridge. As she reached the central reservation, the car struck her, causing her to be thrown onto the central reservation and die instantly.

 

Police have documented the incident and charged the driver with reckless driving causing death. Investigations are ongoing.

Whilst I am not absolving the woman of being a contributory factor to the accident, the driver had a crystal-clear view of her in action. All he needed to have done was ease off the throttle and the lady would had made it to the meridian strip --- and the "accident" would never have happened.

Yeah he was probably on the phone, but jaywalking needs to be a crime here

I drive on this road regularly. I have seen vehicle on the right lane going for quite high speed considering just ahead you will have to stop for traffic light at Theprasit or the bottleneck at Pattaya South road. Its crazy to jaywalk on Sukhumvit road regardless.

See how easy CCTV cameras make policing speedsters?  Nearly 40% of the 272 deaths in the 1st SIX Dangerous Days were caused by this offence.  All it needs is a team of police observing the cameras to lower this figure.  RTP needs to work more than 20 days a year though.

 Like when they speed past you and immediately, cut in front of you,  put the brakes on,  to take a left turn.

Just  mostly idiots.

Yep. Especially ambling across like that. And in the shadow cast by the bridge making her even harder to see.

Ironic, she appeared to make use of the shade of the very thing that could have saved her life.......

 Yes.

The lady was to lazy to use the bridge that was built by pattaya local government,  to allow people to cross the road safely.

She chose not to do that.

Not so sure,  it looks,  right by the bridge.

Looks like the stairs going up,  on the right of the picture.

and she looks like  to be walking in the shadow of the bridge.

It could be an optical illusion. ?

Heavy shopping. Likely the same reason why she didn't use the footpath; shopping being too heavy to carry up the stairs. She wasn't ambling, but actually going as fast as she could. Just an unfortunate sequence of events culminating in the Chinese driver not seeing her until it was too late.
