Hey, the women was walking and he was riding a machine. What about that don’t you understand? Apply some wisdom. Pedestrians have the right-of-way where we come from and here as well.

She was probably walking along the side of the road as is common rural areas and perhaps turned around too quickly or something and some guy smash in to her because he was going at high speeds on a small narrow road. This could have been an 80 year old women too for all we know and was just not paying attention. Those poor people get terrorized.

Without a vid to watch, lot of assuming going on.

One strike against the dirt bike guy, as he probably shouldn't have even been on the road.   So the fault is squarely on him, before even considering if the lady put herself in harm's way.

One thing for sure, it's going to cost a lot of money to avoid jail time, as it should.

At 38, you'd think one would be respectfully of the laws when playing tourist in foreign country.  Why they have laws to begin with.

From experience, many groups ride way faster through populated areas than most, but so do many thais, and when accidents happens, It is because of others lack of paying attention, and do as they useslly do, just crossing the street without even looking, but that is no excuse. Me, we as a group knows this, and therefor more careful around villages and other populated areas.

I understand most people here aren't in Chiang Mai and especially not the surrounding the rural areas so you have no context.

Why I'm going off is because I am familiar with these areas and I'm telling you there is a distinct culture of motorbike riding which incudes "big bikes", Harleys and dirt bikes and often flying at insane speeds through villages. Both annoying because those bikes are extremely loud and dangerous because narrow roads, dogs, elderly etc...

This isn't a Farang problem, they're only a minority, most of them are Thai and they include tourists too from all over Thailand.

Obviously if you do this you eventually kill someone. This is obvious to me so I'm not surprised someone got killed under these circumstances and yes it will happen again.

Don't forgot about the useless and lazy Thai police that don't enforce basic road safety and could prevent this from happening some times.

You can't blame things on the police for non enforcement.

If people obeyed the laws, you wouldn't even need police.  Not in our world or lifetime.   You'll never fix stupid, and enforcement may or may not help.

Take away the scooter deaths here, and driving here is about as safe or dangerous as driving in the USA, and there's plenty of enforcement there.

People driving where they shouldn't be, or people not looking before crossing the street, or at a dangerous spot to cross.

PoPo can't be everywhere all the time, and if they are, don't seem to make a difference anyway.

He violated the law, he'll pay a price for that.   Don't want to victim blame, but I find it amazing how many people make the news by getting run over here.

Having the right of way, doesn't excuse not being cautious when crossing the street.

Why do so many people blame the driver for the death of the pedestrian?

Because it is a heavy piece of metal vs a human body

Reckless driving causing death

Anyone got a link to what sentences have been handed down previously to foreigners found guilty of this? (Link only required please, not predictions).

An American riding a dirt bike struck and killed a Thai woman crossing the road in Mae On District, Chiang Mai. Tearfully, the tourist knelt to apologise to the victim’s family at the scene.

On January 2, officers from the Mae On Police Station received a report of an collision involving a dirt bike and a middle-aged Thai woman. The incident occurred near Ban Sahakorn in Mae On Subdistrict. Emergency responders from Wiang Fa Mae On Rescue Team and medical staff from Mae On Hospital were dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, officers, including Pol. Col. Chakkarin Adsongpongphana, Chief of Mae On Police Station, and Pol. Col. Damnoen Kanong, Deputy Commander of Chiang Mai Provincial Police, found the victim, later identified as Mrs. Kia Saewang, 58, lying unconscious in the middle of the road. Rescuers attempted CPR and rushed her to Mae On Hospital, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The rider of the dirt bike, identified as Mr. Philip Morrow, 38, from the United States, tearfully knelt and apologised to the victim’s family, visibly distraught over the incident.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Mrs. Kia was crossing the road to dine at a restaurant on the opposite side when the dirt bike, traveling from Huay Kaew Subdistrict, collided with her. Mr Morrow was riding his dirt bike alongside his friend, who was on another motorcycle.

Police took Mr. Morrow into custody for questioning at the Mae On Police Station. Further legal proceedings are underway to determine the next steps, but Police have indicated they will charge him with reckless driving causing death.

Is 2 a breast even legal riding? Talking to his mate, not paying attention as supposed to?
