Thai man loses 70,000 baht after scammers use fake ID to access his credit card
Photo via MGR online By Petch Petpailin A Thai man lost nearly 70,000 baht from his credit card balance after a scammer created a fake ID card, gained access to his mobile phone number, and accessed his credit card. The 37 year old oil exploration worker in Bangkok, Kittinat, gathered evidence and sought assistance from the Foundation Campaigning to Reclaim Social Justice after suffering the 70,000-baht loss. Kittinat revealed that he became aware of the scam on January 12 when he experienced a loss of phone signal. Kittinat explained that he was unable to use his phone and contacted his service provider to inquire about the issue. The service provider insisted that his phone signal was functioning normally but assured him that a further check would be conducted. Three minutes after his discussion with the mobile service provider, Kittinat received notifications that his credit card was used three times for amounts of 46,964 baht, 10,000 baht, and 10,000 baht. Suspecting foul play, Kittinat contacted the phone service provider again and discovered that his ID card was used to issue a new SIM card with his phone number in the southern province of Krabi. He requested the provider to suspend the signal of the new SIM card temporarily and reported the matter to Bang Khen Police Station. Credit card accessed with OTP The victim continued investigating the matter himself until he obtained a picture of the suspicious couple who requested the new SIM card of his phone number. The couple reportedly claimed that they lost the SIM card. The ID card they used contained all of Kittinat’s information, except the picture, which was of the scammers. The mobile phone service provider’s employee admitted that the suspects did not present a physical ID card but only showed a photograph of the card. Using the SIM card registered with Kittinat’s phone number, the suspects managed to access his credit card by obtaining the one-time password (OTP) sent to the number. Kittinat added that the scammers also attempted to access another credit card but he was able to suspend both his mobile phone number and his credit card in time. Kittinat stated that he could not fathom how his personal information ended up in the hands of the scammer, as he had never lost his ID card or credit card before. As of now, neither the police nor the mobile phone service provider has provided any updates or clarification regarding his case. Consequently, Kittinat approached the foundation and news agencies in the hope that his case would garner more attention from the officials. Source: The Thaiger -- 2025-01-21 -

Thai tax tangle: Expats warned of new rules on overseas income
TRD 2024 Tax Year Filing Report. Photharam, Ratchaburi. Tuesday, 21 January. Knowing what was coming, for the year 2024 we have lived off savings already brought into Thailand in preceding years. Due to unforeseen hospitalisation I also had to bring in two inward remittances totalling 450,000 Baht. Today I went to my local Revenue Department Office (with wife) this morning to file for Tax Year 2024. Took: My UK Passport; My Thai TIN (obtained easily years ago to prevent Krungsri Bank auto-taking 15% withholding tax off interest payments); A partly completed English Version of Form 90 (filled in as far as I understood it); the TRD attachment for Allowances for Taxpayer 60,000 Baht (and spouse with no income 60,000 Baht); the TRD attachment to claim exemption of 195,000 Baht for over 65 years old; my own Excel spreadsheet in English (with Google Translated Thai) showing MY calculations; a print-out from Gov UK HMRC web-site of UK tax deducted from all UK pensions for Tax Year 2024-25; a print-out of (only) the title page of the Thailand - UK DTA made in 1981 (from Gov UK HMRC web-site). My spreadsheet declared the two large payments brought into Thailand (with dates) and, on my own initiative, unilaterally deducted Baht equivalent of UK Tax paid, about 39,000 Baht (proof above) showing new reduced total of inward remittances. Then deducted 100,000 Baht 'expenses' allowed against income. The lady officer was very polite, chatty, cheerful, and extremely helpful. (Thailand Immigration would benefit taking training in Customer Service and efficiency from her, and I told her this). She worked entirely from my figures on my Excel Spreadsheet, put all the information into her computer, then entered all the numbers (which I didn't fully understand and omitted or pencilled-in) on my Form 90. She returned this to me , AND helpfully completed a Thai version for my wife to follow in the future, should we need to bring in larger sums of £ and so separate filing with separate allowances and exemptions. I knew we should do this, but the officer told my wife, in clear terms, this is what to do! She knew nothing of the Thai/UK DTA, but accepted my 'evidence above' along with my figure for claiming credit for tax already paid in UK. She asked to keep my Excel spreadsheet (presumably to show to those upstream of her in the food-chain). All computations made, she then asked me to sign her computer generated (Thai only) Form 90, and the Attachments for Exemption and for Allowances. Nothing to pay, but she printed out an official TRD receipt in my name, showing zero tax due. Time taken: about 45 minutes, including peripheral chatter with my wife. Job done for another 12 months. Hope this eases some anxieties, and clarifies some issues. -

EV Owners … Real life experience & help thread
Real life vs BS. A while back, someone posted info about the MG ZS, average usage during test rating (NEDC or WLTP) of 18kWh per 100kms ... BS I replied we rarely, if ever use 14kWh/100kms. So, O&A today, PKK - Chumphon, and 3 photos; start, 1st traffic, so now less than highway speed, 88-90 kph when possible. Last, at destination. It's the longest stretch of highway, with no cross traffic/traffic lights. Start: At first traffic light, so now in slower traffic after 154 kms & ~ 2 hrs. Always happy if we can average 80 kph, which we did. Using 13.6kWh/100kms. With a 46.3kwh 'useable battery' equates to a range of 340 kms, on a full charge, all things being equal vs WLTP's 320 kms range at average of 47 kms. The BS 18kWh/100kms equates to 257 kms range 🙄 As I state many times, we average 360 around, mix 30-60-90kph. About 320-350 kms at highway speeds, when available; 87-90 / 110 ish in 120 kph zones. Of course in slower traffic, you squeeze a bit more range out of the battery. Last photo at destination, just 20+ kms further down the road, and now 13.4kWh for the trip, or 345 kms range on a full charge, all things being equal. The MG ZS seems to agree with me, as snapped this at 50%. 174 X 2 = 344 kms REAL LIFE EXPERIENCES vs INTERNET BS 😎 -

Bitcoin @ $100,000 on Trump's Inauguration Day
All of us were very excited when Trump promised a new, crypto-friendly administration. We weren’t exactly sure what that meant, but clearly it had to be good news. But hold on, not so fast Sparky. Gary Gensler was still packing up his office when grifting season 2.0 officially opened. It didn’t take long for $TRUMP coin to kick-off the new Trump-and-dump economy. Everyone should be a little concerned when as leader of the free world, your first action is to launch the world’s largest meme coin Ponzi scheme. For your second act, of course make sure your wife gets in on the fun. Don’t worry though, no rich people were harmed during the middle of the night crypto launches. As oligarchs around the world rejoice, the average self-directed investor has to wonder how they can compete. How is this presidential and does anyone else worry about the future of marketplace integrity and the unapologetic abuse of power? At tasty we have spent our entire careers trying to level the financial playing field for individual investors. We believe in the American dream and in entrepreneurship through goodwill. So, what kind of message does it send to hard working, honest Americans when their new first family is Hawk Tuah’ing worthless meme coins with the sole intent to pocket tens of billions of dollars? If this is what judicial and political reform looks like, our democracy is in big trouble. The unmistakable silence from the new and gutless Washington D.C. swamp is telling. Imagine if Joe Biden had launched the Ponzi economy? Remember, these are the same people who lost their minds over Nancy Pelosi trading for peanuts. Be careful what you wish for America, eventually the suckers run out of money… Tom Sosnoff 2025-01-21 -

Trump just said he is going to pardon the J6 "hostages".
US tech multibillionaires including Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos were given prime positions at Donald Trump’s inauguration today, in an unprecedented demonstration of their power and influence. Be afraid, be very afraid....... Musk, Bezos and Zuckerberg are the world’s three richest people, and in addition to Google co-founder Sergey Brin, who also attended, their combined fortune sits at just above US$1 trillion ($1.76t), according to Forbes. Their prominent positions on the inauguration stage was particularly notable for Zuckerberg, whom Trump had threatened with life imprisonment just months ago. The Meta chief recently made headlines by brashly aligning his company’s policies with Trump’s worldview, notably by eliminating fact-checking in the United States and relaxing hate speech restrictions on Facebook and Instagram. -

Has Thailand Caught Up with the 21st Century?
It depends on the field. In case of the public hospital's ER(emergency room), it looks like pretty much like in the state of the 21st century. Their triage is fast and efficient. And they can handle foreign patients very smoothly; no language barrier as everyone(doctors, nurses, and clerks) there have sound understanding of the English language. So the sick/wounded doesn't be expert in Thai language. According to my experience 2 years ago, when I fell ill on New Year's Eve.
