Wanting Cavendish banana shoots

I have a couple of local varieties in the backyard. Want to try Cadendish the sort we get overseas in all fruit shops. On Shopee it starts around 1000tbh. A little excessive and no guarantee. 
just wondering if anyone here grows them and is kind enough to send me a couple shoots to try.

i had some a few years  ago which I brought from the UK, I seem to remember worldwide cavendish have some sort of serious problem and are dying out, mine never made it to fruiting they died. Not  much help I know but may explain  why you dont see them much anymore.

If you Google the Thai for "Cavendish banana shoots for sale" (ขายหน่อกล้วย คาเวนดิช) there are loads of places selling shoots for way less than THB 1,000 e.g.

Gros Michel was the original commercial banana and was considered better than the cavendish variety.  It was decimated by a fungal disease and was replaced by the cavendish.  The cavendish is now having problems from fungal disease.

Thailand is one of the places were Gros Michel is still available.  Look for gluai hom thong in Thai, กล้วยหอมทอง.

Speaking of bananas, I am looking to buy some Plantains in Pattaya. Sadly I am in a condo so can not grow them but would love to buy a hand every couple of months.

Thanks for the info. Most of them using ขายหน่อกล้วย คาเวนดิช on Shopee are too small to be Cavendish and the bigger ones seem to be the local ones which you buy at in shops and I have them.

Thanks for the offer. Are they really overseas type or the local “hom tong” which are sold at 7/11 as the gentleman suggested earlier. If so I have them. If they’re the real deal I’d love to try them out. Much appreciated.

Just asked the wife and they are the local "hom tong". Sorry for the wrong information as I do not pay too much attention to them. Just that everyone seems to think they are great.

Yeah they’re ok. Was just thinking something different and they’re the type we grew up on back home so little bit of nostalgia added.

I know nothing about bananas so will take your word for it. All I know is that my favourite are Kluai Khai (กล้วยไข่) - small fruits with firm sweet flesh and very thin deep yellow skins (steady on Matron!)

Yeah I like these fat ones too especially when just before they start getting very ripe. “Yummy for my tummy” as Arnie would say. Seems that the real Cavendish search is hitting a dead end.

Hey, the reason why we, as a small family like to buy a single banana from 7 even though we could buy a whole bunch for as low as 10B..?

Too many.  We can't eat that many and my wife doesn't like banana bread.

The only thing left is freeze them for smoothies.

Too much work for baa naa nahs. 🍌

 

The specific variety of banana sold i(at 7-11 in Thailand) isn't always specified, but Thailand is known for its diverse banana species, with over 22 varieties cultivated nationwide.  Therefore, the bananas available at 7-Eleven are likely to be one of the common local varieties.

There are also some dwarf plants which give Cavendish looking bananas. I tried to buy them a couple of years ago, no success. The ones I grow look like Cavendish but once they ripen they go soft and gel like very quickly, especially in the hot season. Taste great though.
