Upon investigation, authorities discovered that the upper room had been modified exclusively for playing poker.

Like many other establishments, I'm led to believe.

Poker should only be classed as gambling if you suck at it, why the organizers/players had cash lying around beats me, playing cards are not illegal in Thailand.

Well actually there are restrictions. You need to check the facts before you spout off.

Could you tell me what they are?

As I said playing cards are available from your local 7/11,  as far as I know an individual is allowed to have 2 packs of cards in heir possession as long as it's under 120 playing cards, and they have the Thai stamp on them.

particularly those involving foreign nationals, in order to maintain law and order.

Whilst ignoring Thai activities.  Note again 'acting on a tip-off' - the source of any successes the Kwaistone Cops have: no police work necessary.

But having more than 2 decks of cards without a license is illegal.   Many years ago, because of a political situation, the police actually raided a Bridge Club event.    It caused an uproar because the "Man On Top" endorsed Bridge and was a pretty good player.  The only face saving technicality the police had to cover the raid was they had more than 2 decks of playing cards.

The 2 pack limit without special licence was what I believed (as you mentioned..... )  but I only read that after the notorious Bridge Club raid of some years ago......

I remember that, always wondered what the out come was.

Some elderly lady got locked up for some hours, and I believe the participants were held for a time then paid a 'fine' each  to be released. What a fiasco....

In theory, there were 32 players, so if each player had 2 packs of each there could have been up to 3840, the last pack I brought from 7/11 had 56 cards, if I remember rightly, 2 Jokers and 2 blanks with Thai on them, so if that was the case 3584 cards in total.
