A motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries in the early hours of January 9, after colliding with a parked 18-wheeler on Sukhumvit Road in Pattaya.

 

The incident occurred at approximately 02:05 near Home Pro retail centre on the Sukhumvit Road, between Central and North Pattaya. Emergency responders from the Sawang Boriboon Rescue Foundation were alerted to the crash and rushed to the scene.

 

Upon arrival, they found a blue-and-black Honda Wave 110i motorcycle with registration number from Pichit province, lying in the middle of the road. The vehicle was damaged, and a safety helmet was also discovered nearby.

 

The motorcyclist, identified as 25-year-old Mr Sahasawat Ounkongrach from Phetchabun province, was found in critical condition. He had sustained a head injury, a large laceration on his forehead and abrasions across his body. He was lying unconscious in a pool of blood, barely breathing. Rescue personnel administered first aid, before rushing him to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

 

The 18-wheeler, belonging to Thai Rung Pattana Transport Co., Ltd., was turning but stopped, with its hazard lights on, occupying two lanes. Its trailer showed minor damage to the rear where the motorcycle had struck.

 

The truck driver, Mr Decha Tumtap, 34, explained that he had parked the vehicle outside the retail centre, waiting for the gate to be unlocked so he could deliver goods. “Usually, someone is there to open the gate immediately, but today I had to wait for security staff to arrive,” he said. “While waiting, I suddenly heard a loud crash. The motorcycle was travelling at high speed and struck the rear of my trailer. The rider was thrown onto the road.”

 

 

Mr Decha added that he immediately tried to signal approaching traffic to prevent further incidents and called for help.

 

Witnesses corroborated the driver’s account, stating that the 18-wheeler was stationary due to the locked gate. One witness noted that the motorcyclist had exited the bypass tunnel at high speed, overtaken their car, and changed lanes abruptly before colliding with the truck.

 

Police Lieutenant Sakayapat Chaidech, Deputy Investigator from Pattaya City Police Station, inspected the scene and recorded evidence. The truck driver was taken to the station for questioning, and authorities plan to review CCTV footage from the area to determine the exact cause of the crash.

 

The investigation remains ongoing.

Typical Thai motorcycle driving style, throw caution to the wind and drive like an idiot,  "my Amulet will save me."

What was he doing in the tunnel in the first place !

I am not too impressed with the truck being parked across a couple of lanes of traffic either. 

A head injury, but he had a helmet but no doubt not wearing it or strapped on.

Just seen an incident on Ch32 news, motorbike undertaking a car and hits a forklift truck parked kerbside, was in broad daylight. Rider killed

Every day, Thais riding into huge parked vehicles at high speed. Quite incredible. Lemmings come to mind.

'Parked' in the Thai sense of course.

Yeah, I've always followed the rule of driving only fast enough for what I can see and safely stop for in front of me, here they see a dangerous situation happening and they speed up in to it......Mind boggling!

I think a lot of these incidents are caused by abrupt undertaking manoeuvres. They move to the inside / hard shoulder to get past whatever is in lane 2 / lane 1 without looking first what is in the inside lane / hard shoulder they are moving to. They are then going 60 kmh + and have absolutely nowhere to go faced with the back of a truck.

 

Phones, alcohol, speeding, tiredness or a combination of these and undertaking also all play their part.

The accident happened a long way from the tunnel.

The crash was not anywhere near the tunnel making the tunnel irrelevant to the article.

From the tunnel to Home Pro is about 350 m and I would say a bike racing straight through the tunnel and then changing lanes is very relevant?

and certainly Thais never look at mirrors before changing lanes. Many Thais take off the rear view mirrors on their motor bikes.

There has been a sudden increase in reporting of such "accidents" of late.

I must admit that my thoughts were that the underpass is rather a long way back from Homepro, and he would have exited there on the right side of where the roads come together. Trucks trying to get into large store car parks, parked across 2 lanes of a main highway is the issue. There was a problem years ago, on the other side of Pattaya, to the South, where many similar accidents occurred. It may well have been Macro, certainly near to it.  In the end a U-Turn was closed and then moved to the South. I have found getting into Homepro to be less than easy, as usually vehicles park just before the entrance... that should not be permitted.

The exit point of the tunnel to the entrance of homepro is 613 metres.

 

There is 4 lanes there, 2 were "blocked" by the truck with hazards flashing.... old matey on the scoot was drunk/asleep/using phone.
