I am applying for a ITIN for my Thai wife. I need to have it to put her name on my tax return. 

 

The fw7 IRS form says " the agency that issued or maintains the original record must certify it..Thai passport. 

No notarized copies allowed. 

 

We live in Bangkok near Klong Toey. Wife was told to go to Central World Mall...6th floor...some kind of government office there.

But when she calls no one can give her an answer.

Since she works during the hours they are open she doesn't want to ask for time off unless she/I know she can get what we want in one stop.

 

So anyone have experience with get a Thai passport notarized in BKK?

 

 

 

 

 

 

I'm not sure that a passport issuance office in a shopping mall will know about this.

 

It might be a good idea to call the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' main office on 02 203 5000.

According to the IRS website there are agents in Thailand that can help you get an ITIN.  It sounds like you take the original passport to them.  See the agents abroad at the bottom of this link.

That is one method.

 

The other method is to take the Thai passport to the US Embassy Citizens Services. They can make a Certified Copy that will be accepted by the IRS. You need to make an appointment online and it costs $50, same as all notary services.

One question is if I take my wife's passport to Citizens service does she have to go too? Or can I just take it to get certified by myself?

You should be able to do it without her. If you both went you would each need an appointment.

 

You can always call Citizen's Services to verify.

In my experience the ministry is always very helpful, polite, focused and clear explanation. Plus they have many advanced English speakers if needed.

Thank you. I looked up the USA embassy website and you are correct. I did not believe the USA embassy would certify a foreign passport but they will.  

The branch of the Minsiter of Foreign Affairs location is Central World.  You need an appointment and you need to do it online.  They will ceritfy any official Thai document; passport, birth certificate, marriage license, etc.  Just had my wife's birth certificate done as part of preparing documents for her interview and getting her immigrant visa.

 

If you are trying to do it though the US Embassy Citizens' Services,  you should call them first to see if it is possible to do, and/or asking if an IRS representative is at the Embassy.  Contacting by phone is fairly difficult.  A majority of times they don't answer and the call goes to an answering service, and then the call is not returned.  Good luck.

 

Did you query the Embassy website to see what kind of service they can provide, ala IRS or certifing a Thai document?  Normally, it is only documents needed by an American not a Thai.

I just went online to check for you, and yes, the Embassy can certify a thai passport for applying for an ITIN.  Check this website.
