Have you been scammed/overcharged at 7-11?

Lately quite a few times and typical in branches where there is a lot of tourists where they would scan a more expensive type of cigarettes then I always buy. No idea how many times this happened when I also bought other items, as that's when I not noticed. They look surprised/caught when I told them how much it cost out of my head. Have to admit it is a clever one.

So they are risking getting caught out at great risk to themselves in order to make more money for CP group. Right.

The cashier could not possibly get any benefit from ringing up a higher priced item.

Of course they can, you simply default the slip with a wrong billed item, invoice the right one back and pocket the difference. One of the oldest tricks out of the scam cashier books. Is no different than when one returns a item.

To then do that with cigarettes or a almost identical item but different price, is scam genius junior level.

To remove a wrongly scanned item usually needs manager approval to override the till. So they are in it as well for a few baht and risking their franchise.

I still call nonsense.

Which is why at many 7/11 branches only one staff member is allowed to be the cashier / allowed to touch the cash register drawer. Also why they count the change many time before they hand it to the customer.

In thousands of visits to 7-11, I was almost scammed just once. I paid for an item worth, say, 80 Baht with a 1000 Baht note. The way the cashier handed me the change was not the normal way. I counted the 100 Baht notes on the way out and one was missing. I immediately wheeled around and before I could say anything a 100 Baht note was thrust at me. No sorry. No questions. No confusion. In my opinion, it was a clear attempt to steal 100 Baht with a plan B if I noticed to immediately give me the 100 Baht. It worked as I did not take the issue any further.

 

This was a 7-11 I used regularly as it was underneath my apartment block. This was the cashier's first day in this branch. The next day she was gone, never to be seen again.

NO........... but in the UK at Asian owned shops Indian Pakistani a  few times and one shop tried it several times and I kept showing them...........oh  they laugh and wave it  off, I didnt  go there often so they probably didnt recognise me, usually done with a tenner and giving you pound coins back, one short.

And another one in Australia,a small independent supermarket , guy scanned my items quickly 

 

I had already worked out the total cost before getting to the checkout ,he tries to rush me , not this little black duck I says to Raji

Just a few months ago, I had a cashier give me an extra 100 baht bill in change. Didn't notice until I got home. Returned it to him the next day.

Yes it has happened to me a few times at 7-11s that are almost always busy with many tourists. Now I stare at the screen as they are scanning and if paying in cash, check my change before leaving and also the receipt. Never happened at a 7-11 outside tourist areas though and they are always very friendly and helpful there.

Almost every time I get or I am asked if I want the receipt, but I have been over charged quite a lot, usually by accident, and have always got the money refunded without a fuss. Stay calm and point out the problem and if necessary they will check the CCTV. Some of the Seven/11 (and at other "convenient" stores) staff are just out of school.

I'm not aware that this is a regular problem. Have other members seen this before?

 

Who creates the 'ticket' that is slipped into the clear plastic holder on the shelf?

 

At 7/11 it's always printed by a machine (not hand written), so I'm guessing the data to create the small ticket (with barcode and price) for the shelf comes from a main database (the 7/11 franchise for Thailand is held by CP, their systems are very modern and very sophisticated).

 

I'm guessing that after the cashier has scanned the barcode on the actual product presented by the customer at the cashier point, the price then goes into the cash register for the creation of a total to be paid by the customer.

 

In other words the data for each item for building a total price comes from the main database, the same database used to create the small ticket shown on the shelf. How can they be different?

The shelf tickets are not stuck in place and are easily moved.  A kid can run their hand along the shelf and move/displace the shelf stickers.  The item description text is so small that I need a Magnifying glass to read them to check it is the correct sticker for the item I am looking at!

Perhaps the local 7/11 management (CP the franchise holder for Thailand), or perhaps the parent company / the ultimate owner of the brand, in Japan, which is quite active to explore any activity which might cause an issue and fix it by instructing the local franchise holder to take a specific action have already realized this could be an issue and have taken.

 

And keep in mind that the brand owner (in Japan) have every right to insist and they do insist that franchise holders follow master instructions promptly. CP in Thailand have way too much to lose by failing to follow the rules / regulations/ dictates specified in the franchise agreement.

 

Another point, if the franchise was withdrawn from CP there's several other local Thai operators who could / would apply instantly to take over the franchise and be well capable of success.

 

On the other side of the coin it's well known that the 7/11 brand owner in Japan do continuous monitoring of franchise holders regarding : 1). revenues etc., (brand owner gets  %) and 2). totally following the very detailed rules in the franchise document, have arrangements in place to very quickly replace a franchise holder (small or big) if needed. 

 

Like similar brand owners they have regional teams across the world to check everything. It's very possible the Thai lady / man just before you in the queue at the cashier point is actually a plainclothes 'secret shopper' who goes outside and on a tablet streamed to Tokyo instantly completed a very comprehensive survey.

 

Also  possible the secret shopper will cause an accident to happen and get abusive or whatever and report the response to Tokyo.

Reminds me of a story some time back. The son of a major bookseller met a new GF, son convinced his father to give his new GF a job in one of their big bookstores with big daily sales.

 

Day 1: New gf sold big piles of expensive books and some sales involving 10, 20 + copies of each book. She had privately convinced many buyers that she could give them a big discount if they paid cash. None of the cash went into the cash drawer.

 

She went home that night with several hundred thousand Baht cash in her bag.

 

She didn't come back day 2 and the new bf couldn't contact her. Discovered later she had  very quickly moved out to the other side of Bkk with her family. 

 

Son and his father highly embarrassed, they took no action, preferring to let the matter die a quick death.

NO. Never. The staff is usually young Thais just doing what they are told. They make rookie mistakes as we all did at that age.

Exactly. If they are told to scam stupid tourists, they will do it.
