Ukraine has lost. Britain must now prepare for Russia’s next onslaught

Let us drop forlorn hopes of a Kyiv victory. We now need to ensure that the West can defend itself

It is time to put outrage, passion and wishful thinking aside and face facts: in what may well go down in history as the West’s gravest foreign policy failing of the 21st century, Ukraine has lost the war against Russia. The conflict is likely to come to an end sooner rather than later – and on terms that favour Putin. Britain must accept that the Ukraine war is all but over – and prepare for an even bigger brewing conflict.

There is now a strategic logic for both Kyiv and Moscow to end the war. With the West unwilling to decisively ramp up support, Ukraine knows that the longer the war continues, the more calamitous it will be for Ukraine economically, demographically and – in a country with shallow democratic roots – also politically.

Err no - leave sleeping bears and tigers well alone.

  • Russia never wanted to gain territory. The aim was the de-militarisation of Ukraine and for NATO to stop expanding to Russia’s borders. Seems like they are successfully achieving this and more besides

now let's see who outplays whom, Trump keeps saying that Putin will play fair which it's something out of Putin's vocabulary but let's wait and see, I do believe TACO will be happening, maybe Putin will play along with the usual sweet talk making Trump believe what he's expecting to hear and as a wild guess just to support Trump in his desperate bid to get the Nobel Prize

Russia's long-range bombers kept up attack tempo, showing fleet's 'resilience' despite Ukraine's Spiderweb attack: UK MOD

Russia's bombers are still attacking Ukraine steadily despite Operation Spiderweb, the UK MOD said.

It observed over 70 cruise missiles fired in July, saying it shows the "resilience" of Russia's fleet.

Still, Ukrainian media previously reported that Russia is having to cram missiles on its bombers.

Russia's long-range bombers are still assailing Ukraine at a steady pace despite June's daring drone attack against the fleet, the UK's defense ministry said in a recent assessment

Polish president shows off military hardware, sees Russia 'floundering' in Ukraine

WARSAW (Reuters) -Russian forces have floundered in Ukraine and history shows Russia's army can be beaten in combat, Poland's president told a military parade on Friday marking the 105th anniversary of a victory over the Red Army by Polish defenders.

The parade marked the 105th anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw during which Poland defeated the invading Red Army and prevented Soviet forces pushing towards western Europe.

"Russia is not invincible," Nawrocki said in a speech before the parade.

"It lost to Japan at the beginning of the 20th century, it was defeated by the Poles in 1920, and today, for over three years... it has been floundering after its attack on Ukraine thanks to the support of allies and the solidarity of free nations, including, and at times especially, Poland."

Dramatic images caught the moment a huge explosion went off in the gunpowder workshop at the Elastik plant in Ryazan.

Initial reports said five people were killed, 20 injured and more than 100 people were evacuated from the burning plant. Local Russian news outlets reported the whole warehouse was completely destroyed after the huge explosion.

A witness at the location, in the western Russian city, said: "The warehouse exploded and the missiles flew all around." The Ryazan Incidents Telegram channel said: "Victims were sent to the district hospital. All emergency services are working at the scene."

Strikes by Ukrainian Defense Forces on Russian enterprises and infrastructure have reduced the enemy’s revenues by $74 billion, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reports.

According to an infographic from the General Staff, almost 80% of the air targets hit in Russia were related to oil and gas infrastructure. In particular, 42% were oil refineries and another 37% were oil storage facilities. The rest were logistics objects involved in transporting and exporting petroleum products, such as pumping stations and oil terminals.

The General Staff also noted that, according to Ukrainian estimates, these strikes have already caused a loss of approximately 4% of Russia’s GDP.

Russia cuts troop payments, ranks regions by life value – Ukraine Intel

Against the backdrop of a record budget deficit, the Russian authorities are cutting one-time bonuses for army contracts in a number of regions, while increasing them in others, according to the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine (HUR).

Several regions of Russia have sharply reduced one-time payments for those who sign contracts with the army.

・In Bashkiria, the bonus fell from 1.6 million to 1 million rubles.

・In the Yamalo-Nenets District, it fell from 3.1 million to 1.9 million.

・In the Belgorod Region, it fell from 3 million to 800,000.

・In the Nizhny Novgorod Region, it fell from 3 million to 1.5 million.

At the same time, the amounts are increasing in a number of regions. In Tatarstan, the bonus has been raised to 3.1 million rubles, in the Ryazan region, they promise a million more than before, and in Kabardino-Balkaria, the payment has been increased from 1.5 to 1.8 million.

Ukraine says it has bombed Russian ship carrying drone parts at Caspian port

Ukraine says it has conducted a long-range drone attack on a supply ship that it claims was carrying drone components from Iran, striking it at a port north of the Caspian Sea, in a show of force hours before Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin meet for a summit in Alaska.

Photographs showed a partially sunken cargo vessel at Olya, near Astrakhan, more than 500 miles from the frontline. Ukraine’s military claimed credit for the attack and the overnight bombing of an oil refinery at Samara on the Volga River, deep inside Russia.

Ukraine’s general staff said the ship hit, the Port Olya-4, was “loaded with components” for Shahed-type drones “and ammunition from Iran”. The port, it added, was an “important logistics hub for the supply of military goods”.

Russian propaganda is actively using a new disinformation tactic — staged videos of "capturing" settlements, according to the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

According to the Main Intelligence Directorate, small groups of occupiers with Russian flags try to slip into individual villages and film short clips to create the illusion of success on the front.

These staged scenes are used for "victory" reports to the Kremlin leadership and for distribution in the media to apply psychological pressure on Ukrainian society.

U.S. offers Ukraine Article 5–style guarantees without NATO membership

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European leaders, and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed potential security guarantees for Ukraine modeled on NATO’s Article 5 during their talks, CNN reported on Aug. 16, citing European officials.

According to the report, NATO itself would not be directly involved in providing these guarantees to Ukraine.

The source added that the precise details of the U.S. proposal remain unknown, and it is still unclear how the guarantees would be implemented.

“President Trump does not want to commit American troops or resources to Ukraine’s defense, although European countries have proposed creating a ‘security assurance force’ for Ukraine, which they say cannot function without U.S. ‘support,’”

A weak article by Neil, reduced to a mere columnist for the Daily Fail.

I realise you are constantly fond of talking up Putin and the Russian, and so seek any article that supports your own conceit, rather than parroting your own view in anything like a cogent manner.

Andrew Neil declares that Europe has been reduced to the role of spectator in a world being “remade.” But let’s pause. Was it mere spectators who rallied billions to Ukraine when Washington wavered? Was it passive observers who doubled defence budgets, forged new security pacts, and began the most serious rearmament since the Cold War?

To claim Europe is condemned to silence because Trump and Putin staged theatre in Alaska is to confuse venue with influence. The summit may have taken place on American soil, but the consequences play out on European battlefields and in European treasuries. And in those arenas, Europe is not watching—it is underwriting, it is arming, it is deciding.

Neil suggests the continent has lost agency. Yet it is Europe that has written the cheques, supplied the tanks, trained the soldiers, sheltered the refugees, and set the red lines.  You know how many Ukrainian troops the UK alone has trained? 5 divisions worth, through Operation Interflax. The EU, through EUMAM, has put together almost 7 divisions. The US; about 1 division.

The U.S. may thunder in headlines, but it is Europe that sustains the war effort day after grinding day. Observers do not mobilise entire industries for war production; architects do.

Indeed, the very reason Trump rushed to meet Putin in Alaska is because Europe’s stance has boxed Russia in. Putin knows he cannot fracture European unity, so he looks westward for concessions. That is not Europe’s irrelevance—that is its leverage.

The truth is simple: Europe is not condemned to watch history being made. Europe is making it. What Neil mistakes for sidelining is in fact a redistribution of weight—one in which Europe is no longer content to play junior partner to America, but is learning, painfully and necessarily, to stand on its own.

So no; Europe is not an observer at someone else’s play. It is authoring the next act.

Ukrainian forces struck a Russian column in the Kursk region overnight, leaving Russian General Abachev severely injured, reports the Defense Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

"On the night of August 16-17, Ukrainian units inflicted fire damage on an enemy column on the Rylsk-Khomutovka highway in Russia's Kursk region," the report said.

Lieutenant General Abachev, Deputy Commander of the Russian Armed Forces' Sever (North) Group of Forces, suffered serious injuries in the strike.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio estimates that Ukraine killed up to 20,000 Russian soldiers in just the past month. He said this shows how costly the war has been for Russia.

On August 16 alone, the Russian army lost 900 personnel, one air defense system, four tanks, and eight armored vehicles on the front. Since February 24, 2022, Russian personnel losses have totaled nearly 1.07 million.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces are successfully holding their positions near Dobropillia in the Donetsk region. Russian command is attempting to break through in this sector and is redeploying forces and equipment. So far, their efforts have failed.
