You are misunderstanding "residence certificate" 

You can obtain a "certificate of residence" from immigration even with tourist status. That does not mean you have Permanent Resident status.

To renew your TDL you will need to obtain a COR from immigration.

 

 

Nice, I never knew you could get a 2-year license on a tourist visa. Is that a new thing ?

When I was last there it seemed I coould not get it on METV in Chiang Mai...or maybe I was mis-informed.

Thanks for your kind advice, but I didn’t keep renting a house here anymore. And now I only spend 3 months a year here. 

After 3 months I’m quite happy to move on. If I change my mind I will probably do as you suggest. 

But the hot part before rainy season and rainy season was never much fun anyway. So, I’m happily spending my money on more places now.

Maybe depends on DLT office - in Mae Hong Son only possible to extend from 2 to 5 years on marriage or retirement. An ED visa only good for 2 years extension; 
needed an health statement , proof of residence from immigration and the QR result from the 1 hour DLT video. Cheers

And that is typical throughout Thailand.

The OP has tourist visa status..

He can renew for 2 yr licience.

That was it...staircase desk woman said no COR for tourist visa holders then...so is it a regional variation or CM has changed to allow that if you know?...cheers.

That is correct, but be aware that if your license has expired and you are stopped by the police, you will be fined (personal experience). The one-year grace period refers only to your not needing to start the whole process from the beginning.

In Chiang Mai there are so many factors it's difficult to say why you might be given such an answer.  But I can assure you, not only is it possible for tourists to get a COR in Chiang Mai, they can also get it the next day.  I know, as I got my license in Chiang Mai doing exactly this when I had visa exempt.

You submit your application and ask for expedited processing.  Costs 500 baht, no receipt, and you pickup the next day.

Reasons that might cause them to tell you no to either getting a COR at all, or getting the next day COR:

1. Too many people in line
2. Already committed to too many expedited certificates for the next day
3. Other immigration officers nearby
4. Supervisor/superiors nearby
5. It's a day that ends in y and the officer doesn't feel like it

 

For Chiang Mai, either wait until there are less people in line and no one is around and ask again, or come back another day and try again.

Was several years ago now, and 5 year licences issued a couple of times. 

You obviously need a residential certificate showing the address where you stay, plus it must say for vehicle licence...

Medical certificate also.

Just trot off to agent and obtain the 5 yr TDL..

he said smooth the process, most Lic Agents you will still need to go to TDL and get it.  you will have a fixed time etc  will take a quarter of the time AT the TDL.   most will fake your driving lessons but some will make you sit around their office rather than at DTL  im not expert on all agents  so you would need to ask each one.

I was quoting the OP.

His thread is about obtaining a 5 yr licience renewal and implying agent can achieve this.

Fact is the OP has tourist status. 

If he knows an agent that can do that then great. He can deal with agent.

Hopefully the agent details will be provided so all folk with tourist status can obtain a 5 yr TDL.

It's not a new topic.

Any non-immigrant visa is sufficient. You don't need to be on an annual extension.

So, what I might do is

 

i) pick up a non-imm O when my 2-year DL is coming to an end. I visit the UK twice a year.

ii) enter on that rather than my DTV which is good till 2029.

iii) renew my 2-year DL and be given a 5-year DL.

iv) do a border run and re-enter on my DTV evisa

I'm not sure if that actually works in practice, but with a few notable exceptions, you're not supposed to have two valid Thai visas at the same time. Now that it's all eVisas, it's conceivable that you could obtain a non-immigrant visa while your DTV is still valid, but I could also see that you might run into a problem at some point.

The last time I entered Thailand I actually had 2 valid visas, a DTV and a Non-Imm O, both in e-visa format. I followed the large overhead instructions "Present 1. Passport, 2. Boarding Pass 3. E-visa if applicable" The E-visa I presented was the DTV. Nothing was said about the other visa. I was stamped in on the DTV.

 

The Non-imm O which was only valid for entry for 3 months was never used and has now expired.

 

Any idea why it would not work? Or what kind of issues I might run into?
