It's funny how Trump worshippers rationalize Trump's behavior when he acts in a way that doesn't match their hopes and expectations. The fact is, that Trump's modus operandi has always been to set people who depend on him, whether as subordinates or allies, against each other. So this case is no different. I suspect that one reason that working with Altmank appeals to Trump is that it takes Musk down a peg or 2 and reminds Musk of who's the boss.

How Sam Altman Sidestepped Elon Musk to Win Over Donald Trump

At President Trump’s inauguration, Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI, was relegated to the overflow room while other tech billionaires like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg took prime spots on the dais under the Capitol rotunda.

But days earlier, before flying into Washington, Mr. Altman was on the phone with Mr. Trump, preparing an announcement that would outflank Mr. Musk and put Mr. Altman’s company at the center of the new administration’s agenda for artificial intelligence.

Have you ever considered that Altman keeping his mouth shut may be because that, unlike Musk, he is able to? That he feels secure in his position. That the less publicly said, the better?  It also doesn't speak well of your rationality that you refer to Altman as Sammy Boy.

As much as I have long-enjoyed reading the long articles in the New York Times, one of which you linked here, the NYT is definitely NOT my go-to source of information for all things AI.

In my view, Sammy Boy is just an uneducated Machiavellian charlatan who just happened to luck-out BIG TIME, through no real merit of his own, to become catapulted into the limelight through a bit of TWISTED-fate.

In fact, I would compare Sammy to another Elizabeth Holmes, both in body and spirit, so to speak.

He seems to obviously be nothing but a bag of hot wind and HYPE.

He is also fortunate to be blessed with many good and talented people, working for him, and they are the ones who help to prop him up. In other words, we should see Sammy as a midget standing on the shoulders of giants, rather than seeing him as he apparently sees himself.

I don't have any illusions about Trump, as you seem to suggest. And Trump seems to know almost nothing about Science; this is not a field of much interest to Trump, as we have seen time and again.

As I have mentioned, I would go to other sources, and not the NYT, to follow developments in AI.

One good site you might try is this one, and I will post one/two of the latest videos, if I may:

For some strange reason, Sammy Boy has been able to use his HYPE and Machiavellian Ways to convince/fool Trump into thinking that pouring a Trillion dollars into AI, and much of it to OpenAI, is the way to go. This is not the way to go.  Massive amounts of money/funding will not guarantee success.  This is not the same thing as a Manhattan Project.  Major developments in AI will come from out of left-field, possibly.  And throwing piles of cash at AI is just stupid.

If one were to spend huge amounts of money on anything, then it might be best to spend that money on fostering pure science education, in a much more directed way than has been done in recent decades.

It is true that China has been pouring massive amounts of money into technology and pure science research, as well as AI.

If the US wishes to go to war with China in order to dominate the sciences and technology, than it needs to spend more and spend more wisely than following the weird plans of this HS Grad, Sammy.

AI is NOT a "war" to be won.

It is not another First Man on the Moon kind of thing.

The Chinese will win any war of this kind, just due to their different approach.

Sammy is interested in following his closed-source path, trying to make his OpenAI leader of the pack.

He thinks he can get far enough ahead so that nobody will be able to catch up.

But OpenAI was not of his making.

Sammy WILL be thrown out.

They tried to throw him out just a short time ago.

They knew what they were doing when they tried.

But, Sammy, with his Machiavellian ways, held on like a bad gob of chewing gum on one's shoe.

He is still stuck to OpenAI...but....

Not for long, one hopes.

You might enjoy reading this very simple book written by Kai-Fu Lee, written back in the dark ages, 2018.

Yes, very simple and simplistic, maybe.

Still, we knew at the time that the writing was on the wall....

AI is NOT something that any one country will be able to dominate.

And, throwing a trillion dollars in any single direction, or to any group of three companies...

Is not smart.

My best prognostication is that Sam will go the way of Elizabeth Holmes.

HYPE is HYPE, after the dust settles.

But let's wait and see, because I could be wrong.

Although, I will tell you, I am seldom wrong about people like Liz and Sam.

But your comments weren't about the science. They were about the competition between Musk and Altman. And let's face it, Musk doesn't exactly have a reputation as a teller of truth. Do I really need to cite some of his big lies?

And the fact is, The Decider is Donald Trump. A remarkably ignorant and ill-informed person.

Another realization that might be construed from your comments is how much you adore both Trump and Musk and how much emotional investment you have placed in  them and that you want them to be BFFs. Of course, this is only a surmise. But it does make sense given how the actual facts of the case don't jibe with your interpretation of them.

My reply to your interpretation is this:

StarGate is a DUMB Name.

It is designed to appeal to the masses who dream of and read Science Fiction, and believe in Star Wars, and the possibility that, one day, Man will travel through wormholes to distant worlds.

Sammy knows almost NOTHING about pure science research in the field of computer engineering.

He rode on the broomstick of his HYPE machine to where he is now.

But he will not last.

image.png.99456fd5fb211a52108ffefbe25ef6fc.png

There are real engineers possessing many years of training and research experience at TOP Schools, who see Sammy for what he truly is.

Sammy has no vision, and this is why when his turn came to speak at the news conference with Trump and the guy from Oracle...Sammy had nothing of substance to add to the discussion.

He is a bag of hot air and hype, only.

Sometimes, much time, too much time, must go by before a huckster is seen for what he is.

But, the truth shall out....one of these days.

To quote Lady Macbeth:  “Out, damned spot”

Trump, not knowing much about Science, obviously does not know a "spot" when he sees one, when it pertains to science and technology, and especially pure science. We know this to be true from Trump's past utterances concerning his misunderstanding of all things science-related.

If Trump, through his ignorance, follows Sammy down his rabbit hole, then this will, in future, be seen as the greatest error of Trump's second term as president.

This is a decision you yourself need to make.

If you think you need to, then...who am I to say that you should not proceed with your citations.

I must warn you, however, that I am not one to be impressed by such things.

Musk is a Dodgy Geezer Strugglin’ for Donkey’s Years to Get Two-Dimensional XY FSD Sorted—Now Thinks It’s a Canny Idea to Chuck in a Third (Z Axis, Innit?)

With over 19 billion nicker in government dosh, Musk’s SpaceX is a top brass govvy grafter in its game.

We’re talkin’ contracts for chuckin’ tin cans into the sky, topping up the big floaty gaff (ISS), and helpin’ the military keep an eye on the wrong ’uns.

Even Musk’s jam jar hustle (Tesla) ain’t shy about nicking a few readies off the taxman—$3.4 billion in tax perks, plus a $465 million leg-up from the DOE (yeah, paid back, but still).

Elon’s been bangin’ on about proper self-driving motors for nigh on nine bleedin’ years.

Every time, it’s “next year, me old china, promise!”—and yet, we’re still waitin’.

Now, a bunch of aviation bigwigs and gov bods ain’t too chuffed with Transport Guv’nor Sean Duffy and Musk’s tech nerds, who reckon they can redo the whole air traffic malarkey with a team of rookies.

Why the long boat race?

These muppets can’t even get motors to steer straight, and now we gotta worry about planes fallin’ out the bleedin’ sky?

And cor blimey, it ain’t just a scare story—at least three big bird prangs since President Trump kicked off his round two at No.10 (erm… White House).

We voted for fallin’ eggs—now we got fallin’ planes.

This is all HYPE from Sammy.

And, this might be just one of the reasons Elon hates him.

I don't hate him, but just wish he would go away.

Someday, maybe he will....

Such a thorn in Elon's side, and it's a pity.

There is really no need for Elon or us to put up with this nonsense.

The amount of money Sammy is bandying about, for his company, is ludicrous.

This money will not be well-spent, and probably Musk realizes this.

This looks like the advertising propaganda for Florida Real Estate in the 1950s....

Trump is crazy for falling into this trap.

Trump should know more about scams, including Real Estate Scams, put forward by other hucksters of the same ilk.

Let's now recall the famous honest words from Linus Torvalds....about NVIDIA.....years ago.....

Never a truer word was heard.....

Linus Torvalds....about NVIDIA...

You do realize that Open source software like Linux kernel and git are the closest thing to Communism that we have in the tech world?

Torvalds created the prototype of Linux kernel as a school project.

And it was barely functional.

Thousands of people VOLUNTEERED THEIR TIME TO WORK FOR FREE FOR GLORIOUS OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE COMRADES. 👍

In order to sort of make it work.  Try turning on the verbose error mode.  You'll see all kinds of weird warnings and sometimes errors in open source code.

To me it seems the trouble with OSS in my experience is like there's no one to take system responsibility.

Each coder is in their own silo and ignores errors from other parts of the code base...

Let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater.

OSS will continue to evolve, in a good way, as it always does.

This is the closest thing the software world has to Natural Evolution at its best.

We all know that Form should Follow Function.

But, in a closed-source model, the evolution of software becomes warped, and not purpose driven, or user-need driven.

MS software is full of garbage, especially the newest OS.

The purpose of MS software it make maximum money for MS.

Everybody knows this.

Here's where you're wrong.

Musk has dirt on Trump. Like Epstein stuff.

Musk is the richest person in the world.

Trump doesn't have the power to rein in Musk.

I am sure that if there is any dirt on Trump (and who can doubt that there is) Musk will have it. However it is even simpler, money. Musk funded Trump's campaign to get him elected. This is reinforced by the money Trump owes through court judgements - $580 million or so. Now maybe that amount will be reduced on appeal, but that is far from certain. Sooner or later the courts will come to collect. There is only one place or person that can produce the money - Musk.

If there was, why hasn't it been splashed all over the internet BEFORE Trump won the election. You ever think of that? The deep threw everything at Trump in all out DESPERATION and failed miserably HELPING him to get reelected, if they had anything, ie Epstein files, list etc they would have leaked it over and over! They shot their wad, they GOT NOTHING left. The liberals failed, they lost, it's over for them.

It certainly feels and seems like that's his endgame, the more money he has amassed the more obnoxious he has become, the more out of control his rants are, and it seems like the world is his end game.

Crazy amounts of money is just not enough for this megalomaniac fool.
