Tourist Bus Catches Fire in Sattahip, Passengers Escape in Panic

A group of foreign tourists had a narrow escape when their tour bus caught fire on a highway in Chonburi province. The driver managed to stop the vehicle in time, allowing all passengers to evacuate safely before the flames engulfed the engine.

 

The incident occurred at approximately 10:05 on 9th February along Highway 7, section 5, near kilometre marker 142 in the Plutaluang subdistrict of Sattahip. Police Lieutenant Colonel Ratthaphon Wanna, Deputy Superintendent of the Highway Police Division, received a report of a burning tour bus carrying international tourists and immediately dispatched officers and rescue teams to the scene.

 

On arrival, emergency crews found a Hino tour bus with its engine compartment ablaze. Firefighters battled the flames for over 30 minutes before bringing the situation under control.

 

The bus had been transporting 11 foreign tourists, who had arrived on a cruise ship docked at Laem Chabang, along with a tour guide and the driver, bringing the total number on board to 13. Fortunately, all passengers were safely evacuated, and another vehicle was arranged to take them to their destination.

 

The driver explained that he had picked up the tourists from Laem Chabang and was en route to Sattahip when he noticed oil leaking onto the road. Moments later, flames erupted from the engine compartment. Reacting swiftly, he pulled over and instructed everyone to exit the vehicle before the fire spread.

 

Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the fire, but initial reports suggest a fuel leak may have been the source.

They survived because this bus driver wasnt an incompetent fool like the one driving all those children that were killed

Take a look at many busses.. They are very old and only got a new color to,hide the age... Why no regulations and checks on these busses?? Lives don't count in Thailand, and rules will never be followed, unless for foreigners... as there is the money to get

Seated in the driver seat.... how did he notice oil leaking onto the ground?

Until they regulate the installation and servicing of LPG & CNG systems this will continue to happen.

It is what the driver told police, so I can only report his statement. The police investigation is ongoing, so you would hope these questions will be asked.

One may assume he already knew about the oil leak but for whatever reason chose to ignore it.

I wonder if gas tanks were fitted to this vehicle and if so did the installation pass the recent tests required after the school kids tragedy?

Slightly off topic, but in response to your comment -

I bought a second hand Suzuki Carry Just over a year ago.

Unbeknown to me, it had been converted to run on both gasoline and LPG.

Last year, it passed the Road Tax examination with no problems.

This year, it failed.

The LPG conversion was not an authorised one so we had to remove it.

Did that in a recommended garage and we passed the examination.

 

So, some Land Office people are taking the LPG problem more seriously.
