Almost weekly monks are in the news here, doing illegal and inappropriate things. They're still people, and many come from shady backgrounds, but if this was a legitimate monk, enjoying the sunset and shopping with possible relatives isn't wrong. Monks can speak different languages than Thai.

You have to think that there is some rule in the books against impersonating a MoNK. Then again, anyone can go to a monastery and become one.  

 

The ability of people to post trivial things on FB or other sources is rediculous.  Makes me wish we were back inteh pre FB era where word of mouth was the only means.

 

how much of the crap we get fed here as news would really be news.

I rarely defend Thai "culture", but in the past few days I've seen a few monks at Bangkok shopping malls with what seems to be their relatives. They were also foreign, most likely Lao or Cambodia. 

 

Maybe has to do something with the upcoming holiday that most expats resent due to alcohol ban.
