Controversial photos of a man dressed as a monk strolling Jomtien Beach with a woman have stirred debate about authenticity and propriety. Captured by a local on February 9, the photos show the man, estimated to be between 35 and 45, in the company of three women aged 35 to 60, as they enjoyed the sunset together.

 

Following their beach stroll, the group visited a roadside market, shopping for souvenirs and food items. Witnesses, including local vendors, reported seeing the monk dressed in white, walking closely with the women and snapping photos together, actions some deemed inappropriate.

 

 

A vendor noted that the group bought balm for muscle pain relief and mentioned they did not speak Thai, which led to further doubts about the monk's credibility. Despite his attire suggesting religious ties, his actions raised questions within the local community.

 

The incident quickly became a hot topic online, with many urging officials to investigate and verify whether the person is indeed a legitimate monk.

Yes, my immediate thought too. A monk can certainly have a mother, sisters, aunts and nieces......who may come visit their relative. Some busybodies grabbing the wrong end of the stick perhaps.

Almost weekly monks are in the news here, doing illegal and inappropriate things. They're still people, and many come from shady backgrounds, but if this was a legitimate monk, enjoying the sunset and shopping with possible relatives isn't wrong. Monks can speak different languages than Thai.

You have to think that there is some rule in the books against impersonating a MoNK. Then again, anyone can go to a monastery and become one.  

 

The ability of people to post trivial things on FB or other sources is rediculous.  Makes me wish we were back inteh pre FB era where word of mouth was the only means.

I rarely defend Thai "culture", but in the past few days I've seen a few monks at Bangkok shopping malls with what seems to be their relatives. They were also foreign, most likely Lao or Cambodia. 

 

Maybe has to do something with the upcoming holiday that most expats resent due to alcohol ban.
