Because equinox is coming up (bet ya they hit 300,000 visitors this month) the cops are tossing out the flotsam and jetsam that other wise washes up here.

Good. Pay to play.

I hope Cambodia tosses out the riff raff and welcomes only those expats who have the cash and respect the culture.

So I guess as a foreigners in the Land of Smiles the safe route is 1) Don't buy a house or condo 2) Don't buy a car 3) Just rent everytihng 3) Don't get into confrontations wtih the locals 4) Be prepared to permanently leave on short notice. 5) It just seems like being right is irrelavant if the other party is a local.

Salient points.

Many farang make a mistake and go all in, thinking the system will protect them and their assets.

Just rent.

I had an old guy cut in front of me a while back on a Friday night back in the home country, I beeped my horn and he kept brake checking me, until we came to the red lights, when I pounced out of the car, ran up to his window and ready to start throwing em, he wound his window down and spat at me saying F off, I swear, I could have knocked him out and done some serious damage, because I was so enraged, but I managed to calm down, walk back to my car and laugh in pity for the guy

Another tough guy!

Too much Red Bull in ya that night buddy?

Exactly for this couple "they could not afford to leave".  Way too much invested.  The only I would consider such a large investment would be if I obtained Permanent Residence.

Well thats not the type of attitude that folks who make a successful life here have but if you want to play Bwana, dont expect folks to jump to your defense.

I dont have a Thai wife and I do just fine. Attitude.

Are you telling me you let anyone push you around? What kind of life is that? You are slave for your own money, or you dont have a choice but to stay there ?

Who is going to push me around? Anyone is too nebulous. Where? Here? USA?

Are you suggesting that maybe the elderly man deserved to be knocked unconscious and sustain about 22 additional punches to the head while on the ground?... and his wife being attacked?

I'm only suggesting that I'd like to hear the other side of the story before drawing any definite conclusions. I admit it doesn't sound like anything could justify what was done, but it would be interesting to hear why the other side says they did this.

so, wtf are you talking about? If someone on your property, you gonna stand for yourself or let them treat you like a rabbit. Two young guys with fighting skill belted an old couple and you taking their side? WTF

I thought it was a young (40 something) farnag and his Thai GF.

When did it escalate to two young guys ?

"younger couple allegedly versed in Thai boxing", don't know anything about Farang, but whoever it was belted the older people and it doesn't sit right in my books. I have no idea what are "you" trying to prove

So let me get this straight. They beat the sh*t out of this elderly couple and it was all caught on CCTV. The assailants confessed to the crime only later to cry about how they hurt their hands (superficial injuries) by beating the sh*t out of this couple and mental distress by facing the repercussions of their crime. Only to file counter charges about their own criminal activity to get the elderly couple imprisoned?

What a clown show!

A British newspaper claims "The pair have spent every penny they own trying to clear their names".

Just how much is a lawyer for a simple criminal case costing them. What on earth are they doing?

I'd think it would have cost so far no more than 20,000 baht, and the trial itself would be no more than 30,000. Am I disconnected from reality?

The police and court system in Thailand have treated me really well.

Nobody asked for bribes, attacker was traced and caught, cash compensation was paid, sentencing to come in May.

When the guy said it was all my fault, the judge turned to him and said "find a better defense, you're going to jail".

Not been quick though, happened in Oct 23, sentencing in May 25 ....... 18 months from start to finish.

I didn't even hire a lawyer, all done by public prosecutor, my only expense was 2x court translator fee (required by police) at 1,000bht a time.

May I ask what happened exactly? What were the circumstances?

what is the golden rule?

“In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you. . . .”

“In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you. . . .”

The original phrase from the King James Bible (1611):

Matthew 7:12 (KJV): "Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets."

Luke 6:31 (KJV): "And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise."

This is often paraphrased as "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

The phrase is not solely bound to Christianity....

Judaism: “What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor. This is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation.”

Islam: “None of you truly believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself.”

Buddhism: "Treat not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful."

Hinduism: "This is the sum of duty: do not do to others what would cause pain if done to you."

Confucianism: "Do not impose on others what you do not wish for yourself."

AseanNow: "Hang-em high, they have it coming

No matter who was in the wrong, there is no justification for the beating they took. Do you see the young thug with injuries? Who was in the hospital with injuries? Who is selling up and leaving? They got all they wanted and are going for more.

There is no reason to hear anything they have to say. Nothing they have to say can make it right.

Yes, you are completely disconnected from reality. There are 2 criminal court cases here, the first one as plaintiffs, the second one as defendants. There will be some civil cases for damages as well, so up to 4 court cases. 9 years ago I spent a lot more than that, and I got a good deal. Good lawyers will charge more than 100k for each court case. They already lost their first payment as the lawyer did nothing.
