British Retirees Avoid Thai Jail After Violent Land Dispute

Des and Mary Byrne, a British couple, narrowly avoided jail in Thailand, receiving a 9,000 baht (£200) fine instead. Their troubles began in 2020 when a land dispute with neighbors in Hua Hin turned violent. The 77-year-old retired engineer and his 69-year-old wife were brutally attacked but were shockingly prosecuted alongside their assailants. Despite CCTV evidence, the Byrnes faced charges while their attackers paid compensation. A campaign involving British officials helped secure a lenient sentence, allowing them to reclaim their passports and return to the UK. Though they had to sell their villa to cover legal fees, they are relieved to leave the ordeal behind, ready for a fresh start.

Does anyone know more details about the cause of this problem. I think the old couple clearly annoyed the attackers over a period of time. What exactly was the dispute about?

On the facebook site Residential construction for expats, it is stated that

There are 2 sides to every story....
Reading the article......
Paying out £200,000, ฿8,750,000, for home and lease, they walk away.
The owner of the land, whoever it was, now owns the relatively new home also.
A 30 year lease may not be as good as what people think that it is.
Taking Prosecution action against Defendants here in Thailand in the courts is also not as good as what people here may think that it is.
Tables can be turned very quickly against Prosecutors where they become the Defendants
Just so our members can be advised and to consider all aspects of buying, building, leasing and living here in Thailand.

Its been mentioned that they were still able to sell the villa which is good for them.

What was the cause of the problem?
