absolutely, schooling, paper degrees etc really do not tell how smart one may be.   Compare their survival skills in relation to a non-schooled local in some jungle area.  Having gone through survival training by non-book schooled instructors I quickly learned how DUMB I really compared to them if I needed to survive in many areas of the world.  Even by western standards, survival in many cities is specific too.  Depening on how smart one may be determines how rapid he can recognized whatever skills are needed to survive in any particular area and if lacking find some other place to be.  I have lived and worked in many rather dangerous areas and managed to survive as I learned early on to recognize the possible dangers and what was necessary to avoid that danger.  Just like here in Thailand, reading the news daily lets me know that there are some real dangers here too so there are certain areas I avoid and precautions that i need to take in many other places here.

From my personal experience, every foreigner thinks they're smarter and better educated but unfortunately they're far too stupid to see the irony in their situation. Judging by your replies so far, you're certainly no exception.

It's actually a very subjective subject and it's rather condescending. Kind of a typical "we white people are so vastly superior" type meme.

 

My Thai woman for example has a high school education but is absolutely brilliant, she has an incredible memory she's taught herself fluent reading and writing of Elglish, she has the mind of a structural or mechanical engineer, she can just look at something and she knows how to take it apart and put it back together, her mind works like a high-speed computer and after nearly 20 years together she continues to astonish me with her intelligence. But it's a very practical form of intelligence, she's not a philosopher, she's not into the higher sciences, but she's very curious and she's constantly teaching herself about the world and it's quite fascinating to watch the way she processes stuff. Her mind is lightning quick. 

 

Thais have a completely different way of looking at the world, and a completely different way of relating to the world, and it makes it very difficult for us to truly evaluate their intelligence, but I think we consistently underestimate them.

Well no actually I think you are wrong.  I am not expert so open to being corrected.  I think the results in the west are on a scale so that 100 is always the average.  But, there are more 90 IQ people than 110.  Not sure of the details but anyway the average person in the west should be within 90-110 range with more below the 100 line.  Not that any of that matters I also test higher than average and did so very young without much education at the time.
