A 48-year-old man drowned in a wastewater treatment pond in Maha Sarakham after reportedly attempting to rescue his pet dog. The incident occurred in the Nong Bo area of Borabue district, Maha Sarakham.

 

Police Lieutenant Colonel Supravee Purisa, an investigator from Borabue Police Station, received a report from a passerby who had been jogging near the pond. The jogger noticed a small dog struggling in the water and, upon closer inspection, saw a pair of shoes and a parked motorcycle with a sidecar nearby. After rescuing the dog, they suspected its owner had entered the pond and immediately alerted the authorities.

 

Rescue teams from Borabue District were dispatched to the scene, and a diving unit was deployed to search the pond, which is approximately 3–4 metres deep with steep, sloping sides. After a 15-minute search, they recovered the body of Mr Winyu, 48.

 

Relatives of the deceased stated that he regularly took his dog for exercise in the area. They believe the dog may have accidentally fallen into the pond, prompting Mr Winyu to attempt a rescue. He is thought to have lost his footing and drowned.

 

The family has accepted the cause of death, and authorities have released the body for religious rites.

At least he managed to resque his pet dog.

Then he was one of the the few living in this country who actually deserved to care for a dog.

Its also tragic that so many drown in such pond when solutions are so overwhelmingly simple... 

 

Due to the steep and slippery sides they're impossible to climb out off... 

 

With just a little forethought, a simple rope on a couple of the sides would resolve this issue and potentially save so many lives.. Even a bamboo ladder fixed to the side... 

How much extra effort with that really take ?   the issue of course a complete absense of forethought towards safety.

 

Perhaps those who 'own' such ponds should be held accountable for at least providing some basic safety equipment - a rope across the centre, and ladders at two sides - force people (owners) into taking responsibility.

 

 

The true tragedy of course is the amount of kids to drown in ponds in Thailand (with drowning being the leading cause of death in those under 16 yrs old).
